The MA Chinese-English Audiovisual Translation is designed to prepare students to work in the fast-growing audiovisual sector of the language industries. The driver for industry growth is the ubiquitous availability of video content. Audiovisual translation accounts for up to a third of language services activity both in China and internationally.

The program focuses on technological competence and practical skills building in a range of audiovisual translation modes. The program also offers a broader grounding in key concepts and audiovisual industry dynamics. Students build their core skills through compulsory units in applied translation, CAT tools, translation theory and concepts in audiovisual translation. They can then take options in subtitling, videogame localization, introduction to specialised translation or translation and international film distribution. Students can do a research-based or a practice-based dissertation; the dissertation must be on a topic related to audiovisual translation.

In your first two years you will supplement your study of biochemistry with units relevant to medicine, such as pharmacology, physiology and molecular pathology. This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to analyse and use numerical data within criminology. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Criminology course, where you will acquire core knowledge in crime and justice. By drawing on social harm perspectives, criminology at Bristol examines conventionally defined crimes along with other problem activities or behaviours which may not be criminalised but which still cause extensive harm to individuals and society. This approach helps you to develop a critical and informed understanding of crime and the criminal justice system, as well as related social and economic questions.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. As well as considering generic policy concerns, the programme gives you an opportunity to choose from a range of substantive policy issues, which might include the international analysis of poverty and social exclusion; public management and organisations; migration, asylum and human rights; the economics of public policy; and corruption and public policy. Every unit considers policy in an international and comparative context.

The first year provides a broad background in pure, applied and statistical mathematics via a range of compulsory units. You'll cover material in lectures and small-group tutorials, with the freedom to explore a range of topics in collaboration with your personal tutor and fellow students.

From year two you will focus more on statistics and probability, although there is still scope to take some units from other areas.

As you move through the course you will gain academic independence, progressing from small-group tutorial teaching in year one to an independent statistics project in your final year.

This degree is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and you'll be automatically entitled to Graduate Statistician status on application to the RSS, provided you achieve at least a second class honours degree.
