Bachelor of Arts in Music and Italian

at University of Bristol - Clifton Campus United Kingdom

Overview

This joint honours degree combines a full course in music with Italian, which can be studied from beginner level. This combination will provide you with a valuable skill set that is ideally tailored to the increasingly globalised workplace.

Bristol has an enviable record for its research both in music and in Italian culture. Our degree offers the chance to learn the Italian language and to gain an understanding of the complexity of Italy as a nation through studying Italian culture from the middle ages to the present day.

Music offers a broad range of units in musicology, composition and performance, across diverse styles and genres. These are complemented by weekly concerts, regular masterclasses and performances in the department, and opportunities to get involved in the dynamic music scene in Bristol.

Italian language and culture have had a lasting impact on Europe. Italy's innovative contributions to design, technology and fashion make it a major commercial force globally. Italy is both traditional and modern, a tension that is apparent throughout its history and culture. Musically, it is the founding place of opera, Renaissance culture, and a driver of avant-garde composition in the 20th century.

You will spend your third year abroad in an Italian-speaking environment, which will enable you to refine your language skills and cultural knowledge.

This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts. The course combines the broad historical knowledge and research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying a modern language.

You will join two departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

Your third year will be spent in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of your host country while studying or working. Those who choose to study at a university will be urged to select history-based options, while those who opt for work placements will be encouraged to seek placements in the heritage sector. In today's fast-changing and globalising world an ability to understand the diversity of human behaviour and experience across space and time is extremely valuable. Our BA Archaeology and Anthropology offers an exciting, interdisciplinary perspective on what it means to be human, employing archaeology and social, biological and linguistic anthropology to address key challenges past and present. These include migration and mobility, sustainable heritage and development, and technological change and social inequalities.

Our programme provides students with practical and professional skills designed to enhance employability through activities such as the analysis of big data on contemporary population health; biomolecular investigation of archaeological finds; and the presentation of cultural heritage to the public.

Year one introduces the fundamental theories of the two disciplines. You will take units that introduce you to the disciplines of archaeology and material culture studies as well as social, linguistic and biological anthropology.

Years two and three allow greater specialisation in skills, regional foci and current debates. You will become familiar with the range of research methods and theoretical frameworks employed and the sorts of questions archaeologists and anthropologists ask.

A wide variety of optional units exploring particular themes, periods and geographical areas is available at second- and third-year level.

The third year provides an opportunity to pursue a specialist area of interest working closely with a member of staff to write a dissertation on an original topic of your choice. There is a work placement option with an external partner such as a museum, commercial archaeological unit or national heritage organisation.
