Our BA Classics degree focuses on the study and appreciation of a wide spectrum of Greek and Latin literature. Languages are taught at all levels, from absolute beginner onward. Some classes concentrate on building and developing language and translation skills; others focus on literary criticism and engagement with the text.

In the first two years you will study both Greek and Latin language and literature as well as choosing from optional units on a wide range of topics, including Graeco-Roman literature, philosophy and art. There is the possibility of studying abroad for one semester in the second year.

In your third year you will continue to study at least one language and choose from a range of special subject seminars based on our academics' wide range of research interests.

In cooperation with a supervisor, you will also research and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. You will also plan, promote and execute a project aimed at presenting the ancient world to the wider public, with a member of staff acting as adviser.

The Department of History of Art offers a broad-based master's program, which enables you to study a range of periods and approaches before specialising for your dissertation. The MA draws on the research strengths of all members of the department, which includes specialists in medieval, renaissance and modern art.

We aim to help you develop an informed understanding of the main strands of art history, as practised in Europe and North America. We also offer curatorial units in collaboration with external museum partners, through which you will learn to research and catalogue museum collections and to mount exhibitions.

Our students are drawn from a variety of backgrounds. Some have undergraduate degrees in art history, others do not, and some are working artists. This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within politics. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours Politics and International Relations course. You will study the politics of individual countries and governments and the relationships between countries, communities and individuals. You will become familiar with different views and methods of analysis, learning to apply and evaluate them.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured.

Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

In year four we offer training in more advanced quantitative methods suitable for postgraduate research, while continuing to develop expertise and specialist knowledge in politics.
