This program creates links between social work research and practice in a range of settings. You will be taught the necessary skills to undertake research into social work and social care as practice-based professionals or as postgraduate research students.

This degree helps you acquire vital tools to maximise your work in addressing real issues of concern with policy makers, managers, practitioners and service users in social work and care.

The program offers a combination of academic rigour, up-to-date practice content and relevant and transferable research skills development. Core units will draw on theories and research methods from across the social sciences - including economics, law and philosophy - providing you with a strong foundation to then carry out your own research.

Optional units build on our particular research expertise and will focus on the skills you will require as a social work researcher engaged with a range of multi-disciplinary colleagues. For example, you may choose to study community development programs in the context of poverty, interventions to tackle domestic violence, or programmes for young offenders. Other optional units focus on the wellbeing of particular groups: children with disabilities, people with severe and long-term mental illness, or asylum seekers and migrants.

We recognise that students will be joining with relevant, albeit varied, experience and there will be opportunities for you to draw on your own experiences as researchers, managers and policy advisers and to share these with other participants on the program. A co-learning environment also gives you the opportunity to interact and share insights with other students studying research degrees in disability studies, policy research and health and wellbeing. 

Ancient History at Bristol gives you the flexibility to combine core units on Graeco-Roman culture and history with more specialised topics.

In the first two years you will take core units exploring the history of the ancient Greek and Roman world, the sources of information available for reconstructing it, and the different approaches employed by modern scholars. You will also choose from optional units on a wide range of topics dealing with Roman and Greek society and culture, including literature, philosophy and art. You may also choose to study Latin or Greek. There is the possibility of studying abroad for one semester in the second year.

In your third year you will choose units from a range of special subject seminars based on our academics' wide range of research interests.

In co-operation with a supervisor you will research and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. You will also take the Applied Classics unit and plan, market and execute a project aimed at presenting the ancient world to the wider public with a member of staff acting as adviser.

This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts. The course combines the broad historical knowledge and research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying a modern language.

Your third year will be spent in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of your host country while studying or working. Studying a modern language in the context of its speakers' history, literature, experience and outlook can broaden horizons and challenge preconceptions, including those about one's own language and country.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

You will study film alongside Spanish language, history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching.

You will spend your third year in a Portuguese-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. In year four you will complete an innovative supervised independent project, consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort (e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article).

You will be taught by experts in the field and teaching is informed by staff research interests.
