This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts. This course combines the broad historical knowledge and well-developed research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying modern languages.

You will join two leading departments with expert researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

You will spend your third year abroad, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of your host country while studying or working. This unique interdisciplinary MA offers you the opportunity to study Black Humanities through critical engagement with the histories, philosophies, languages, literatures and arts relating to local and global African and African Diaspora communities.

Based on cutting-edge research and dialogue with arts and community activists, you will study debates about race, ethics, and representation. Together we will ask how the arts and humanities reflect and generate changes in society. Through your reading and seminar discussions, you will be encouraged to tackle urgent questions concerning racism, anti-racism, and social justice. These will be discussed via historical and contemporary contexts in Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, and Europe. Over the course of the program, you will also learn more about Black experiences in Britain, and specifically in Bristol, a city deeply entangled with the transatlantic plantation economy and site of an ongoing, complex, legacy of memory work.

The University of Bristol is home to the Centre for Black Humanities, an international hub for research that informs our teaching, ensuring the syllabus ?is always underpinned by the latest knowledge. Our members are engaged in pioneering research on topics including UK hip-hop, History and Memory of Enslavement, African literary activism and the Lusophone Atlantic (follow @BrisBlackHums for more information on the Centre’s activities). This will be reflected in our program of external speakers and opportunities to engage with Bristol’s cutting edge cultural scene.

Migration needs new thinking. The MSc in Migration and Mobility Studies offers a rigorous and exciting approach to the study of migration and its connections to other types of human movement. You will learn about migrant workers and global firms, migratory soundscapes and the relation between migration and racialisation.

Through its innovative combination of arts, social sciences, law and humanities, the MSc will enable you to understand and engage with some of the most pressing political and policy issues of our time.

The program will:

• Enable you to think critically about migration and migration policies: explore how to think about and work on human movement without turning migration into a problem;
• Learn new methodologies: broaden your research skills, break down disciplinary boundaries, think theoretically, and know why this matters;
• Be taught by leading researchers conducting groundbreaking work on themes such as human movement and freedom, mobility and justice, and histories of citizenship globally;
• Develop career opportunities: transferable skills and knowledge that will be useful in a wide variety of careers from international NGOs, local government and community organising.

This joint honours degree combines historical and theoretical study with practice-based investigations of theatre, film and television. There are opportunities to engage with industry professionals and to use our museum-accredited archive, the Theatre Collection.

In your first year you will attend lectures, seminars and workshops that will introduce you to analysing performance in a wide variety of forms from stage to screen. You will also be introduced to a range of practical production skills in theatre and film.

In subsequent years you can choose units exploring significant historical movements, contemporary practices and theoretical concepts. Your final year independent study projects can mix group or individual performance, a short film, a written dissertation, an industrial placement or an industry study.

You will have access to filmmaking equipment, production studios and editing software and to the Wickham Theatre, where productions are presented and practical teaching takes place. We also have strong links with theatres, arts centres and media companies.

This joint honours degree explores different ways of developing an understanding of crucial issues within public and social life. It combines the focus of social policy on wellbeing with sociology’s insight into how contemporary societies operate.

Both departments encourage strong synergy between research and teaching, resulting in a vibrant learning environment as staff respond in their teaching to new research.

Sociology explores the structures of societies and how they constitute social patterns. This is crucial to our understanding of how different groups in society experience wellbeing, as well as the dynamics needed to change patterns of inequality.

In your social policy studies, you will focus on key issues such as inequality, risk, need, and the social processes and institutions that enhance or impair wellbeing. You will draw on social, political and economic theory to analyse and explore these in a global context.

The study of identity is a burgeoning area of sociological and cultural studies. Over a range of units, this programme provides an introduction to key themes in this field, with identity explored in both theoretical and substantive ways.

On the one hand, there has been an exciting and innovative strand of work that explores and re-theorises the ideas of subjectivity and selfhood in the context of changes brought about by late modern and postmodern society. On the other, the question of identity has come under scrutiny within substantive areas of sociology, such as the sociology of race and ethnicity, the sociology of religion and the sociology of gender relations.

There are also important discussions concerning the ways in which identities are recorded and observed, including debates over new narrative and other qualitative methodologies.
