Overview

This course combines the broad academic content of our business and management degree with an overseas dimension that reflects the global nature of modern business.

This degree is the same as the three-year BSc Business and Management course until you get to year three, which you will spend studying business and management in the host language of a partner university. You will have already developed your existing language experience by studying the language of your host country during your first and second years. This course focuses on policy and the rights of children and young people from birth to 19 years, exploring contemporary debates within a global context. Our research-based teaching includes the expertise of lecturers from related disciplines, including education, psychology, sociology, social work and law.

You will consider childhood in the contexts of families, peers and society at both a national and international level. Topics of study include children’s rights, development, education, therapeutic work with children, safeguarding, youth justice, and child and adolescent psychology, among others.

Years one and two are identical to the three-year BSc Childhood Studies. In the first year you will develop a solid understanding of the social, psychological and historical constructions of childhood. In subsequent years you can choose optional units from a wide range of subjects, allowing you to pursue different routes through the degree to develop the career path that is right for you.

One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. There is growing demand for skilled graduates to work in industries such as consumer electronics, alternative energy and transport, medical engineering, and communications.

This course provides full accreditation for the qualification of Chartered Engineer.

Years one and two provide a strong grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, power electronics and control. You will also take language classes to prepare you for your third year overseas.

If you are creative, enjoy design and aspire to improve the built environment we live in then civil engineering is for you. This degree will equip you to find solutions to environmental problems and to design large and unique structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams and coastal defences.

At Bristol, you will have access to our world-class laboratory facilities, including the most advanced earthquake shaking table in Europe.

The first two years provide a strong foundation in engineering, including mathematics, structures, soil and fluid mechanics, computing and surveying, as well as optional units. In your third year, you will undertake a major research project and continue to develop key professional skills.

Our MSc Management pathways provide an introduction to management followed by a detailed exploration of a specific area of management theory and practice, in this case CSR and Sustainability. The MSc Human Resource Management and the Future of Work is an intensive master’s-level specialist program for graduates who have a prior qualification in social sciences and wish to develop their knowledge and skills in the practice, theory and policy of the world of work.

The future of work has become one of the defining debates of our generation. Whilst the greening of our economies will create millions of jobs, many traditional forms of work will also disappear. Our BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures degree offer an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in depth and breadth. You will study global literatures and cultures in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.

Core units in years one and two currently include What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture. Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures.

Your third year is spent in a German-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. You will follow a programme of study in German, developing linguistic skills enabling you to communicate easily in writing and orally. In year four you will complete an innovative supervised independent project, consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort (e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article).

This four-year MSci course is for those considering scientific careers that will make direct use of their subject-specific knowledge and skills. The first and second years of this course are identical to MSci Chemical Physics but during year three you will spend 12 months on a placement as a paid employee in a company.

You will focus on areas at the interface between chemistry and physics, with limited treatment of organic chemistry and more physical and non-synthetic inorganic chemistry. Similarly, there is very little nuclear and particle physics after your first year but an emphasis on materials science and nanoscience.

As well as lectures and practical classes, small-group tutorials and workshops help develop your understanding of challenging and exciting concepts. Practical labs in both chemistry and physics help develop experimental techniques, computational modelling and programming skills needed in the final year for conducting a research project with a research team.
