The dynamics of social and public policies are highly complex and often have unforeseen consequences. This course gives you the tools to explore, analyse and critically evaluate policy issues in and across societies in a range of geographical and cultural contexts. International Social and Public Policy draws on several disciplines, including economics, political science, sociology, behavioural science and philosophy, asking you to compare key ideas and theoretical frameworks.

This multidisciplinary, international degree integrates the analysis of government policy with the understanding of broader global political, economic and social change. This course focuses on policy and the rights of children and young people from birth to 19 years, exploring contemporary debates within a global context. Our research-based teaching includes the expertise of lecturers from related disciplines, including education, psychology, sociology, social work and law.

You will consider childhood in the contexts of families, peers and society at both a national and international level. Topics of study include children’s rights, development, education, therapeutic work with children, safeguarding, youth justice, and child and adolescent psychology, among others.

Years one and two are identical to the three-year BSc Childhood Studies. In the first year you will develop a solid understanding of the social, psychological and historical constructions of childhood. In subsequent years you can choose optional units from a wide range of subjects, allowing you to pursue different routes through the degree to develop the career path that is right for you.

The programme provides intensive training in the neurosciences as they relate to the physiologic function and behaviour of the organism. This MSc conversion program is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is designed for students from non-psychology backgrounds and provides training in the theories and methods of contemporary psychological science. After successfully completing the program, you will be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS, which is a prerequisite for pursuing a career in psychology.

One of the broadest engineering disciplines, electrical and electronic engineering uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. There is growing demand for skilled graduates to work in industries such as consumer electronics, alternative energy and transport, medical engineering and communications.

This Year in Industry degree provides the opportunity to spend your third year in an industrial environment applying the knowledge gained in your first two years of study. There is no direct entry on to this course but you can transfer from MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering after year two if you reach a high academic standard and are successful at interview with industry. Places are limited and highly competitive.

Years one and two provide a strong grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, power electronics and control. You will spend your third year on a placement in industry.

Economics follows a series of core units in the first and second years, covering micro- and macro-economics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics. Researchers, research managers, policy advisers and service planners are all faced with a growing need for research that is timely and relevant. This program builds on the links between research and policy in developing the particular skills and capacities needed by policy-oriented researchers, professionals and postgraduate students who are interested in carrying out public policy, social policy and social welfare research. We believe this is vital if researchers are to maximise the impact of their work in addressing issues of real concern to policymakers.

The program provides core research training in philosophy and research design in the social sciences, along with introductions to and further approaches in quantitative and qualitative methods in the social sciences. It also offers optional units in our particular areas of research expertise, such as child and family welfare, gender and violence, health and social care, poverty and social exclusion, and policy-oriented evaluation.

We recognise that students will be joining with relevant - albeit varied - experience. Therefore, there will be opportunities for you to draw on your own experiences as researchers, managers and policy advisers and share insights with other students working towards research degrees in disability studies, social work research and health and wellbeing.
