This degree will enable you to understand and explain the ways in which religion significantly shapes the world as well as offering a rare opportunity to study the subject at home and abroad.

Your first year provides a solid foundation in religion’s complex interaction with the modern world. Subsequent years allow you more flexibility to shape your degree to suit your interests.

In years one and two you take units covering issues and approaches to the study of world religions. You will be offered optional units on various aspects of Buddhism, Christian history and theology, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Chinese and Japanese religions. You can also choose to study one of the following languages: Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin or Sanskrit.

After successfully completing years one and two, you will have the opportunity to spend your third year abroad at one of our partner universities. During your fourth year you will explore the theme of comparative religions and take optional units that enable you to focus on a theme or pursue broader issues. You will delve into the subject by producing a dissertation.

This challenging, one-year taught master’s degree covers a range of advanced topics in multimedia signal processing and communications. These include the properties and limitations of modern communication channels and networks, alongside the coding and compression methods required for efficient and reliable wired and wireless audio-visual transmission. The program builds on the research strengths of the Visual Information Laboratory and the Communication Systems and Networks Group within the Faculty of Engineering at Bristol. Both groups are highly regarded for combining fundamental research with strong industrial collaboration. Their innovative research has resulted in groundbreaking technology in image and video analysis, coding and communications. Both groups also offer extensive, state-of-the-art research facilities.

This MSc provides in-depth training in design, analysis and management skills relevant to the theory and practice of the communication networks industry. The program is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, one of only a handful of accredited programmes in this field in the UK.

BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures and French gives you an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in depth and breadth. You will study global literatures and cultures in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.

Core units in years one and two currently include What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture.

Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures. Teaching is informed by staff research interests and you will be taught by experts in their fields. 

You will spend your third year in a French-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. You will follow a programme of study in French, developing linguistic skills so that you can communicate easily orally and in writing. In your final year you will complete an innovative, supervised, independent project consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort, e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article.

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within social policy. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.

About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Social Policy course, where you will acquire core knowledge in your subject. You will focus on key issues such as inequality, risk, need, and the social processes and institutions that enhance or impair wellbeing. You will draw on social, political and economic theory to analyse and explore these in a global context.

The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured. Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.

This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts. The course combines the broad historical knowledge and research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying a modern language.

You will join two departments with top researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

Your third year will be spent in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of your host country while studying or working. Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and is the most common second language in the US. Studying a modern language in the context of its speakers' history, literature, experience and outlook can broaden horizons and challenge preconceptions, including those about one's own language and country.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

You will study film alongside Spanish language, history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching.
