This MSc conversion program is for students from a variety of academic backgrounds who have little or no previous academic computing experience. The aims of the programme are to build:

• An understanding of the basis of computer science and its importance in software development;
• An understanding of the underlying principles of computer systems and their applications;
• An introduction to industrial-style methods of analysis, design, implementation, testing and documentation in software development;
• An appreciation of the current state and future directions of technological advances in computer science.

In your first two years you will supplement your study of biochemistry with units relevant to medicine, such as pharmacology, physiology and molecular pathology. Your third year focuses on medically relevant aspects of biochemistry, such as those relating to cancer, cardiovascular disease and drug design.

Your final-year research project will involve collaboration with internationally renowned scientists on pioneering work. Previously, students have collaborated on the development of a technique for the manufacture of red blood cells from human stem cells, and on the molecular modification of an antibiotic, increasing the range of infections it can treat.

Neuroscience is beginning to influence education across the world. This program, which can be studied on either a full-time or part-time basis, will provide you with the skills and understanding to interrogate and integrate insights from neuroscience and education.

It is suitable for teachers and practitioners of all subjects and across all ages, including teachers of children with special needs, educational psychologists, education managers, policymakers and educationalists who are keen to contribute to the research agenda of future cognitive neuroscience and educational neuroscience research. It is for those who want to enrich their thinking and practice with insights about typical and atypical learning from the sciences of the mind and brain.

The program also provides an excellent foundation for further research studies, such as a PhD, that involve the ideas and methods of cognitive neuroscience in areas related to education and learning.

You will engage with the latest research literature and debates, including the latest findings arising from the sciences of mind and brain in areas relevant to education (such as reading, attention, mathematics, language and learning disorders, autism, adolescent development, technology and creativity, along with many other areas). You will become an active researcher who draws on findings from neuroscience, psychology, genetics and educational research in order to carry out your own small-scale experiments and research studies, leading to the major work of your dissertation.

You will also complete a range of assignments that encourage written, graphical and oral communication of your ideas. You will become part of a broader community of study and research in the field of neuroscience and education through lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. The program will help you to gain confidence in making critical judgments about research findings, and in debating and discussing issues or ideas in the field of neuroscience and education.

If you care about animals then this exciting degree can lead to a range of careers, from working as a veterinary nurse in general practice, to opportunities in the field of behaviour and welfare for animal charities or the commercial sector.

Having achieved accreditation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the course is provisionally validated by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB) as fulfilling the academic requirements for accreditation as a Certificated Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) and already provides you with the opportunity to begin gaining the practical experience needed for certification as a CCAB. Your first two years are based predominantly within Bristol city centre where our pre-clinical facilities are situated at the UK's only School of Anatomy. Years three and four are based at Bristol Vet School in the beautiful Somerset village of Langford. This course is equally weighted towards sociology and philosophy and you will take units from both subjects throughout the course.

The sociology half of the degree places particular emphasis on sociological theory and its application to real-world concerns covering topics such as consumption, the environment, modern slavery, risk and food. Sociology also provides an opportunity to develop your research skills. The philosophy element offers you a thorough understanding of philosophy including logic and critical thinking, epistemology and metaphysics and a range of other units including ethics and political philosophy.

This four-year MSci course is for those considering scientific careers that will make direct use of their subject-specific knowledge and skills. The first and second years of this course are identical to MSci Chemical Physics but during year three you will spend 12 months on a placement as a paid employee in a company.

You will focus on areas at the interface between chemistry and physics, with limited treatment of organic chemistry and more physical and non-synthetic inorganic chemistry. Similarly, there is very little nuclear and particle physics after your first year but an emphasis on materials science and nanoscience.

As well as lectures and practical classes, small-group tutorials and workshops help develop your understanding of challenging and exciting concepts. Practical labs in both chemistry and physics help develop experimental techniques, computational modelling and programming skills needed in the final year for conducting a research project with a research team.
