Data science is an exciting, emerging discipline that has a profound impact on society. The world produces increasing volumes of data every day and making sense of this data has the capacity to be transformative.Data science combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches to enable knowledge discovery from data. Employability prospects in this field are very strong.

Bristol’s data science expertise means that you’ll be taught the sophisticated theory and methods needed to address modern data-analytic challenges by leading academics in this field. You will study units involving a blend of theoretical background and practical skills designed especially for this new course, including Mathematical Tools for Data Science, Advanced Linear Modelling and Classification, and Algorithms and Machine Learning.Our highly interdisciplinary program features links with the Bristol Institute for Scientific Computing (BriSC) as well as exposure to real-world problems from our industry partners.

With applications across a wide range of industries, studying data science will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to fast-track your career. Pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, market research, social media, finance, sports and disaster management are all fields with high demand for data scientists.

If you’re interested in pursuing further research, our Centre for Doctoral Training, COMPASS, offers the opportunity to study computational and statistical science through a four-year PhD program.

This four-year course covers a broad range of subjects organised into three streams:

• Aerodynamics
• Dynamics and control
• Structures and materials.

These subjects are specialised from day one and are taught with aerospace applications and examples.

The first two years are devoted to core concepts, which are taught via lectures and backed up by practical experience through coursework and lab work. Further material, such as space applications and aviation operations, are covered in specialist units.

You will also learn skills that cross all the streams, such as computing, systems engineering and design. There is extensive mathematical content throughout.

In year three your research project allows you to tackle a problem in detail, such as the automated landing of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV), design of a potential space mission, or experimental testing of advanced composite materials.

In year four there is greater flexibility for you to pursue options that interest you. Some units relate to particular application areas, such as helicopter aerodynamics, space systems or wind power. Others study particular technologies, such as composites analysis or experimental aerodynamics or you can choose to undertake a research project.

The diversity of topics in aerospace engineering makes this a challenging degree but the reward is a uniquely broad education.

This course allows you to combine subjects from the School of Economics and the School of Accounting and Finance with the benefit of one year abroad. 

The School of Accounting and Finance prepares you for a career in the accountancy profession or financial markets through access to subjects accredited by several professional accountancy bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Additionally, you will be prepared for a career as an economist, studying in a School of Economics run by world-leading experts. 

Places on the course are allocated on merit depending on first-year examination results and availability of spaces at destination universities.

Our Chinese-English Translation MA program will increase your understanding of the field of translation and interpreting. You will explore how practical translation is informed by theory, develop your verbal and written communication skills, and build your IT literacy to help you produce translation of the highest quality. Students graduate from the program equipped with specialist skills in interpreting and localisation, as well as transferable skills such as analytical thinking, research and collaboration, which are essential to today's increasingly global market.

Students coming to the UK from overseas not only learn advanced translation skills from and into Chinese, but also develop their English language competency and their knowledge of UK and international culture. The program is also open to students for whom English is a native language with a high level of Chinese, typically undergraduate level or higher.

Postgraduates are full members of the academic community, with the opportunity to participate in the many research seminars and conferences taking place within the Faculty of Arts.

The School of Modern Languages has an established record in translator training and excellent industry links. Its translation staff include practising professional translators and translation researchers. We are a corporate member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting and an institutional member of the American Translators’ Association (ATA). We are on the ATA’s list of approved providers of translator training. Students have an opportunity to obtain SDL Trados translation software certification.

Our intensive, one-year, MSc Management with a specialism in entrepreneurship and innovation is for graduates from a wide range of subject backgrounds. It is not necessary to have any prior academic or practical experience in business or management. This programme is for students who aspire to start their own business or join start-ups within their chosen industry.

Our MSc Management pathways provide an introduction to management followed by a detailed exploration of a specific area of management theory and practice, in this case entrepreneurship and innovation. The program attracts students from around the globe and you will work with students with different backgrounds and interests.

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of setting up enterprises. You will critically evaluate areas including entrepreneurial strategies, business innovation, sustainable enterprise, and the selection of technology.

We aim to guide, teach and develop analytical and confident critical thinkers. You will gain insight into the nature of management and entrepreneurship and will be armed with the knowledge to apply management theory to practice. Group work and presentations, often based on industry case studies, allow practical application of theory and develop the teamwork and communication skills expected in today's workplace.
