Social policy provides an exciting opportunity to critically analyse contemporary social issues related to human wellbeing, inequality, disadvantage and crime. This course takes an international and comparative perspective in many units, ensuring social policy is considered in its global context.

The first year introduces key concepts and ideologies and familiarises you with theoretical, comparative and historical analyses. It also develops your research skills as a social scientist. Year two develops conceptual frameworks further and deepens your understanding of research methods.

This joint honours degree allows you to study two complementary disciplines, both of which ask you to think carefully about texts in their broader cultural and historical contexts.

This course combines the broad historical knowledge and well-developed research skills gained in a history degree with the in-depth cultural awareness and advanced linguistic skills that come from studying modern languages.

You will join two large departments with researchers in a great diversity of fields and will be encouraged to develop expertise and research skills relevant to both disciplines while also considering the relationships between them.

Your third year will be spent abroad, where you will have the opportunity to explore these intersections in the distinct cultural and social context of a French-speaking country while studying or working. You will get the chance to explore these intersections independently in a dissertation in your fourth year. You will be required to write a historically minded dissertation using some sources written in French.

Alongside your in-depth education in childhood studies you will apply your subject knowledge by translating ideas into plans for digital and creative enterprises, both social and commercial.

Childhood studies at Bristol provides you with a holistic understanding of children, childhood and adolescence, combining elements of education, psychology, law, social work and social policy. You will consider childhood in the contexts of families, peers and society at a national and international level. Topics of study include children’s rights, development, education, therapeutic work with children, safeguarding, youth justice, and disability in society.

An English degree from the University of Bristol gives you the opportunity to study the full breadth and range of literature written in English.

Year one lays strong foundations, providing training in close reading, critical and theoretical approaches and in the skills and conventions of academic writing. Alongside this you will study poetry, narrative writing and drama from the medieval period to the mid-18th century. You may also choose an optional unit or a unit from another department in the University.

In year two you will continue to study successive periods of English literature, from the mid-18th century to the present day, complemented by work on individual authors and topics chosen from a list of research-led, special subject units. Studying a modern language in the context of its speakers' history, literature, experience and outlook can broaden horizons and challenge preconceptions, including those about one's own language and country.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television. You will consider theoretical perspectives, appreciate how films are made and engage in practical filmmaking activities.

You will study film alongside Spanish language, history and culture units, choosing from a wide range of options that allow you to pursue your own interests. Both departments offer a vibrant learning environment with research-led teaching.

In your final year you will return to Bristol, where you have the chance to undertake a placement in the creative industries.

The theatre and performance studies course builds your understanding and practical skills by exploring critical and historical frameworks alongside practical workshops. There are opportunities to engage with professional theatre makers and our museum-accredited archive, the Theatre Collection.

In your first year you will learn how to analyse performance while developing practical skills in a range of performance practices, including theatre design, lighting, costume and production. In subsequent years you will choose from a range of options that will deepen your analytical, critical, practical and historical expertise.

Your degree culminates in an independent study project. This could be a group or individual performance, or a dissertation. You will also have an opportunity to undertake an industrial placement. We have strong links with the creative industries and placement partners have included the Bristol Old Vic, MAYK, In Between Time and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory.
