Physics is a truly international venture. The new National Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction Laboratory at the University of Bristol, which will be operative from 2021, is a £12 million investment that will enable large prototype scale experiments for use by both academics and industry in the field of earthquake engineering and infrastructure resilience.

One of the many highlights of the year is a field trip to an earthquake affected area in south-east Europe. You will have the opportunity to visit structures designed with innovative methods to resist earthquake forces or inspect the damage of a recent aftermath by using modern tools for non-destructive material testing and remote imaging. The costs of the trip – accommodation, travel, daily subsidence and insurance expenses – are included within the tuition fee for this program.

Data science is an exciting, emerging discipline that has a profound impact on society. The world produces increasing volumes of data every day and making sense of this data has the capacity to be transformative.Data science combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches to enable knowledge discovery from data. Bristol’s data science expertise means that you’ll be taught the sophisticated theory and methods needed to address modern data-analytic challenges by leading academics in this field. This MSc conversion program is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). It is designed for students from non-psychology backgrounds and provides training in the theories and methods of contemporary psychological science. After successfully completing the program, you will be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS, which is a prerequisite for pursuing a career in psychology.

You will learn the theories of social, cognitive, developmental, biological and individual differences psychology, and develop the skills to understand and apply the research on which these theories are based. You will also learn how to design research studies and analyse data to provide valid answers to meaningful psychological research questions.

In your dissertation, you will combine these skills and knowledge to develop, carry out and report on a substantial piece of original, empirical research.

Teaching and dissertation supervision is undertaken by internationally renowned academics, who employ a variety of teaching and assessment methods (eg lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories, essays, reports, examinations). These methods help you to develop transferable skills, such as critical thinking, psychological and scientific literacy, research skills, teamwork, and oral and written communication skills, which are valued by employers across a wide range of industries. They also help to prepare you for further postgraduate study in psychology.

This five-year degree comprises clinical activity with integrated scientific and technical teaching. With a strong core of clinical work throughout, theory, science, clinical skills, personal and professional development and teamwork are integrated at the relevant levels.

Year one introduces the clinical environment through peer group activities and observations. Clinical skills training and patient contact commence early in year two.

Later in the program, you can choose to intercalate in a science subject to obtain an Honours BA or BSc. There is the opportunity to undertake community work in the UK or abroad during your elective in year four.

The program structure is helical, with four main themes of development: Practitioner, Scholar and scientist, Professional and Agent of Change, Person and Citizen. You will be introduced to basic concepts in the healthy patient before progressing to apply your knowledge and skills to treat an increasingly complex range of oral diseases.

You will begin your dental practice in the Bristol Dental Hospital before extending your practice to community teaching clinics in the city. Here you will treat patients with a wide variety of dental diseases in a primary care setting in preparation for dental practice beyond graduation.

In your first year you will gain a broad understanding of biomedical science and take units in microbiology and diseases caused by microorganisms. In addition to learning about the immune system, you will also study pathology and biochemistry.

In year two you will study the cellular and molecular basis of human diseases caused by microorganisms, such as shigella and tuberculosis, and viruses. As well as learning about the immune response to a variety of infectious microbes, you will investigate how bacteria acquire antibiotic resistance. You will take three infection units and an optional unit in your third year.

The additional, fourth year includes an extended research project and advanced research skills training with an emphasis on enterprise. You will plan projects, communicate with a variety of audiences, and learn to translate and commercialise research.
