Master of Science in Physiological Science
The MSci Physiological Science is focused on an extended research project, which provides the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of how to plan and perform experimental research in a specialised subject area. The course provides valuable day-to-day experience of what it is like to be a researcher and develops the skills required to embark on a career in research.
The first three years follow the BSc Physiological Science. During years one and two you will learn how the major organ systems in the body function together to maintain health. Alongside physiology, you will have the opportunity to study complementary subjects, including pharmacology, anatomy and psychology, broadening your knowledge of the biomedical sciences.
By the third year you will be getting to grips with the latest cutting-edge research on topics such as neurological and psychiatric disorders and the heart in health and disease, taught by staff who are internationally recognised in their research area.
The majority of your fourth year will focus on an extended research project in a research laboratory environment. Bachelor of Science in Physics with Astrophysics
This course provides a thorough grounding in physics with astrophysics as a key component. It is led by an internationally renowned astrophysics research group and covers a broad range of contemporary astrophysics.
In years one and two the course introduces all of the key concepts in astrophysics and then focuses on cosmology. In year three you will progress to more advanced topics such as galaxies and high-energy astrophysics.
Your final-year project will be with a member of the astrophysics research group. The group currently specialises in cosmology, galaxy cluster astrophysics, galaxy evolution, black holes and active galaxies, and the formation of extrasolar planets.
The course gives you the opportunity to develop a physicist's broad range of skills, including problem-solving, numeracy, teamwork and the ability to communicate complicated concepts. In your final year you will take three infection units and an optional unit. You will also undertake a research project or scientific dissertation working in a research group either within the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine or in one of the surrounding hospitals. The four-year BSc Medical Microbiology with Study in Industry is available via transfer after securing a placement during your second year.

This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within sociology. About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours sociology course. You will study society’s structures, forms of action and cultural practices, and understand changes in social life. The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. In today's fast-changing and globalising world an ability to understand the diversity of human behaviour and experience across space and time is extremely valuable. Our BA Archaeology and Anthropology offers an exciting, interdisciplinary perspective on what it means to be human, employing archaeology and social, biological and linguistic anthropology to address key challenges past and present. These include migration and mobility, sustainable heritage and development, and technological change and social inequalities.
Our programme provides students with practical and professional skills designed to enhance employability through activities such as the analysis of big data on contemporary population health; biomolecular investigation of archaeological finds; and the presentation of cultural heritage to the public.
Year one introduces the fundamental theories of the two disciplines. You will take units that introduce you to the disciplines of archaeology and material culture studies as well as social, linguistic and biological anthropology.
Years two and three allow greater specialisation in skills, regional foci and current debates. You will become familiar with the range of research methods and theoretical frameworks employed and the sorts of questions archaeologists and anthropologists ask.
A wide variety of optional units exploring particular themes, periods and geographical areas is available at second- and third-year level.
