Our BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures degree offers an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in both depth and breadth. You will study global literatures and cultures in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.

Core units in years one and two currently include: What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture. Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures.

You will spend your third year in a Spanish-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. You will follow a programme of study in Spanish, developing linguistic skills enabling you to communicate easily in writing and orally. In year four you will complete an innovative supervised independent project, consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort (e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article).

You will be taught by experts in the field and teaching is informed by staff research interests. The course is delivered in varied ways through lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and one-to-one supervision. You will participate in small-group teaching and may be asked to give introductory talks to initiate discussion.

In the Department of Film and Television, guided by leading scholars and practitioners, you will explore the history of film and television, considering theoretical perspectives and appreciating how films are made. You will also engage in practical filmmaking.

The curriculum progresses from introductory units, which use specific topics to teach you how to analyse film and television, to more advanced units. These cover significant historical movements, contemporary practices and the theoretical concepts that underpin, inform and shape film and television.

You will be trained in scholarly investigation and critical thinking through essay writing, presentations, and through working collaboratively in groups to make short films. Throughout your studies you will learn from a variety of film and television professionals and in your final year you will have the chance to undertake a placement in the creative industries.

This program will equip you with the specialist skills and knowledge to pursue a wide range of careers in the banking industry. It has been developed with the needs of the sector in mind and reflects the industry’s growing demand for individuals with an extensive knowledge of regulation and compliance.

Our program has a distinctive focus on banking regulation, supervision, compliance and risk management. It goes beyond traditional banking and finance courses by exploring the regulatory demands within banking and examining the role of central banks and international organisations in achieving and maintaining financial stability.

The MSc in Banking, Regulation and Financial Stability is designed for graduates of economics or finance who aspire to a career in banking. It will also appeal to recent graduates who are already working in financial services and wish to specialise in banking and financial regulation, as well as those who intend to continue to PhD research in this area. The MA in Anthropology will help you to develop a nuanced and cross-cultural perspective on the challenges that humans face in our fast-changing world, with content that reflects our research strengths in adversity, adaptation and globalisation. You will put this understanding into practice through hands-on activities and work experience in Bristol’s thriving media, creative and cultural industries, as well as social enterprises. In addition to the core themes of the program – which explore inter-related real-world themes such as sustainability, technology, engagement, arts and materiality - you will receive advanced training in theory and method delivered through world-class research-led teaching.

The program will introduce you to anthropological research design and data analysis using qualitative and mixed methods, including ethnographic and visual methods; survey, interview and focus-group design; statistical analyses and hypothesis testing; and ethics. You will have the opportunity to undertake an off-campus placement with an external partner such as a media-tech company, museum, heritage organisation, NGO or local authority. You can gain first-hand experience of working in a vibrant, innovative and diverse industry while putting into practice the skills you have learned throughout the course. To be effective in business and management in a multinational environment requires an understanding of the cultural, linguistic, economic, political and social contexts in which organisations operate, both within and across national borders.

BA International Business Management and German will help you develop the intellectual, analytical, critical and employability skills you will need to succeed as a manager or leader in many careers across different sectors. A knowledge of German, the second most important language for European business besides English, will allow you direct access to the cultural production, political debates and economic data from German-speaking countries.

Your first year will introduce basic concepts and tools – both qualitative and quantitative – for the study of management. Alongside this, you will develop your proficiency in German from a beginner's level or post A-level and gain a grounding in key aspects in the history and development of German-speaking communities. 

In years two and four, through a combination of core and optional units, you will develop your understanding of international business management and gain some specialisation in an area of interest. At the same time you will combine advanced study of German with optional units in the history, culture and politics of German-speaking countries.
