The MSc programme in Money, Banking and Central Banking focuses on the changes in the banking and financial markets during and since the Global Financial Crisis, as well as the changes made by major central banks in the running of their monetary policies since then. The programme will pay particular attention to the assessment of the policy responses given by world leading central banks to the Covid-19 crisis and their effects on prices and output over the medium and long term.

Banks and central banks play a pivotal role in the sound functioning of modern monetary economies. The 2008-09 Global Financial Crisis was a powerful reminder of how important it is to understand their functioning and operations, and the relationship between the quantity of money and the overall economy.

Unlike any other programme in the UK, ours emphasises the importance of high quality monetary and banking analysis, allowing our students to assess which policies are compatible with stable economic growth and long term financial stability.

Our students will leave with expert knowledge of monetary economics, monetary policy, risk assessment and how financial institutions operate. They will be equipped with the specialised knowledge and skills required for a career in central banking, as well as monetary analysis suitable to pursue a career in consultancy businesses, research departments and specialised media.

The degree provides a firm grounding in diplomatic theory and practice. It covers the history and operation of diplomacy; the causes of conflict and strategies for conflict resolution; the nature and operation of international organisations, including the United Nations and its agencies; the development and global role of supranational organisations, especially the European Union (with an emphasis on its external policies); global political communication, including the media and new forms of communication; the practice of great power politics. It is taught from the Centre for United Nations Studies.

The Director of the of the Centre for UN Studies is Mark Seddon – a former Senior Communications Adviser to the President of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa and former speechwriter to UN Secretary-General, Ban ki-moon former & Director of Communications, UN Special Envoy, Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown. He is also a former UN Correspondent for al Jazeera English TV. The Deputy Director is Dr. Paul Graham – Previously taught at Glasgow University and has published work on John Rawls (Rawls, Oneworld Publications, 2016) and an important textbook – (with John Hoffman), Introduction to Political Theory (Routledge, 2015). He has an interest in questions of global justice and conflict resolution.

The Centre’s Deputy Director is Dr. Paul Graham. Paul previously taught at Glasgow University and has published work on John Rawls (Rawls, Oneworld Publications, 2016) as well as “Introduction to Political Theory” (with John Hoffman) (Routledge, 2015). He has an interest in questions of global justice and conflict resolution.

The BSc Biomedical Sciences with integrated foundation (3 years) is taught on the Crewe campus awarding graduates of this course a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences degree.

Biomedical science focuses on how cells, organs and metabolic systems function in the human body. Through this understanding of health and disease processes, new treatments and therapies can be created or developed, contributing to necessary advances toward solving significant health problems facing today’s society

Our Certificate in Medical Foundation Studies is a level 3 qualification designed for those students who wish to study on our BSc (Hons) Biomedical sciences programme but do not currently meet the entry requirements and require additional preparation prior to undergraduate level study. The programme is intended to provide a foundation in both knowledge and academic skills for a seamless transition into the BSc.

You will encounter the canon of great authors, from Shakespeare onwards, but you also study themes like Film, Gender, and Empire. We don’t think that formal essays are always the best way of assessing how students understand a subject, so you will find that you have opportunities to write a book review, reportage, poems and short stories, even part of a screenplay. Reliable, speedy and secure transmission of information over such devices is vital for the successful exploitation of the technologies.

Authentication, using biometric data as a sophisticated means to combat fraud, is increasingly accepted by both businesses and governments. Biometric authentication solutions require good use of imaging and data mining techniques in constructing and verifying customer profiles. Online organisations have accumulated large collections of online data that need speedy processing and analysis. If you are interested in finding out more about any of these technologies, then this programme is for you.

International relations impact our everyday lives; through war and terrorism, climate change, migration and the clash of great powers, such as China and the United States. At Buckingham we provide students with the methods for understanding international relations and the tools for resolving global challenges and conflicts. You will study key concepts and theories and then apply these to countries and regions of the world, such as Latin America, China, the Middle East and Europe.

Central to the Buckingham experience is small group teaching and a problem-centred approach. Lectures themselves are interactive, with classes normally no larger than 50 students and tutorials – which the forum for group discussion – typically having eight students. Lectures and tutorials are taken by regular staff, who are experts in their field, and not by graduate teaching assistants. And academics have an open door policy, so if you have problems or simply want to discuss further what has been presented in class you are welcome to do so. Bridging the gap between medicine and psychology, our course focuses on understanding the behavioural processes around health, illness and disability, and is one of the only British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited MScs in this subject to offer an 18-week placement. Our MSc Health Psychology programme is designed to allow students to develop knowledge and skills across all of the main areas of health psychology to postgraduate level. We cover a wide-range of topics, from advanced research methods to a working and evidence-based knowledge of health psychology approaches, theories, models and interventions.

You will develop a strong knowledge base and core transferable skills. You will learn to analyse, debate, discuss and devise behaviour change interventions for use in primary, secondary and community care. You’ll become autonomous in the design and analysis of research, and develop skills towards becoming an independent researcher. You’ll develop an awareness of the practical reality of working in applied settings before going on to perfect those skills in our embedded placement. All of this will provide you with a solid foundation for further study and employment in a variety of areas, including psychology and research assistantships, PhDs, and further training in health or clinical psychology.

The course consists of a rigorous and intellectually demanding study of the ‘core’ disciplines of, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Financial Analysis and Portfolio Modelling, Auditing, Derivatives and Financial Risk Management, Economic Analysis, Empirical Techniques in Finance and a dissertation.

The dissertation, which forms a substantial part of the assessment of the degree, will allow you to develop your interests in either mainstream or wider business and societal aspects of Accounting and Finance.
