Building on our successful composition and technology courses, this degree focuses on the technical and creative aspects of being a successful songwriter. You’ll explore a range of songwriting techniques, composing and recording songs and building up your studio skills to a professional standard. This degree involves a practical workshop programme, establishing and refining your understanding of the tactile qualities and properties of materials and how they can be manipulated to express your ideas. This dynamic course gives you the sound knowledgeable and placement experiences to become a skilled, contemporary Physiotherapist. Covering anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, Physiotherapy practice and electrotherapy, the course hones your skills and provides opportunities for you to work with other healthcare professionals. You will carry out a two-week practice placement in Semester A and a four-week placement at the end of the first year in Semester C.  During the second year there are two, five-week practice placements and in the final year you will carry out three, five-week practice placements By adding an additional short course to your degree, you can gain level 2 and 3 qualifications with PD:Approval and gain entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals, boosting your employability.

The LLM Intellectual Property and Data Protection Law will give you the knowledge and understanding you need to work in this area of the law. You will study two compulsory modules – Intellectual Property Law and Data Protection Law – along with two optional modules of your choice.

You will examine the development of both intellectual property law and data protection law as distinct areas of legal practice and consider their ongoing reform and development, particularly in light of continuing technological advancements.

The Intellectual Property Law module will also consider the current intellectual property framework from a national, European and international perspective, along with copyright, trademarks, patent law and design rights.

The Data Protection Law module will also include topics such as current data protection legislation, key concepts such as the notions of ‘informed consent’ and ‘personal data’, the obligations of data controllers, the rights of data subjects, and the emergence of Big Data and the Internet of Things.

A core Literature module in your first year will equip you to read and interpret both traditional and contemporary literary texts critically as a scholar of English literature. Alongside this you can choose to revisit Shakespeare and consider his cultural relevance today through fictional, cinematic and TV adaptations; or to deepen your understanding of Gothic writing by tracing its origins back to the Romantic era.

In your second year you’ll focus on period-based literature from the Renaissance onwards and gain an understanding of literary history, from Elizabethan verse and drama, via Augustan poetry and the emergence of the novel in the 18th century, to the radical transformations of the Victorian age, and the emergence of modernity in the twentieth century. You’ll also have the opportunity to consider ways of reading that go beyond textual analysis or historical context, such as understanding literature through the political or ideological lens of Marxism, feminism and post-colonial theory.

The MA Creative Music Production is aimed at applicants specifically interested in applying studio technologies and production skills to the creation of their own original music (as opposed to “producing” other artists’ music). In addition to equipping students with solid bases in studio technology, processes and practices, the course addresses the purely formal, artistic and aesthetic aspects of music-making, and the specific compositional devices and strategy applicable to DAW-based realisations of original material.

By surveying the defining traits and aesthetic concerns of a number of popular genres centred on electronic composition-production, students develop a sophisticated awareness of current artistic and aesthetic trends, and an enhanced knowledge of the musicology of production. The MA Journalism and Media Communications (with Advanced Research) is a two-year, full-time taught programme. During the course you’ll explore the synergies between social media, PR and journalism, focusing on current media practice and the technologies of convergence. Modules may change from year to year but are likely to include Corporate Communication, PR and Advertising; International Journalism Trends; Writing for Magazines; Sports Journalism; and Media Production as well as modules on research methodology. You also have a range of options for your final project. This can be a dissertation on a media subject of your choice, a short work placement, the one-year sandwich placement or a larger media research project, depending on your chosen route.

For Media Production you’ll create multimedia – podcasts, video and advertising – for online magazines, pitch and measure a campaign and use social media to promote your work.  A strong practical element in Writing for Magazines will equip you to write for social media and understand how to create content and engage audiences.

Our module International Journalism Trends explores news ownership and media production on a global scale and provides deeper insight into the theoretical and cultural framework of media and journalism. Sports Journalism will give you a grounding in the exciting practices of sports journalism, from interviewing top stars to reporting on breaking sports stories.

Two modules on research methods and critical and theoretical debates will equip you with advanced research skills and the transferable communications skills - including interviewing, identifying a story and building connections - that are vital for roles in PR and Corporate Communications.

In addition to these modules, in your second year you will also take Advanced Media Research (30 Credits) and the Media Project (60 Credits). The focus of these modules is to develop your professional practice by applying skills learnt to advance your career.
