With an increased scrutiny on eating and obesity, along with demand from both government and the public for nutritional and dietetic education, the role of dietitians has never been more important. Dietetics is the interpretation and communication of the science of nutrition, which enables people to make informed choices about food and lifestyle. Explore the English Language from a variety of different angles and further your skills with a unique film course which combines the study of film as an art form with learning the practical skills of film making.

Our BA English Language and Film degree introduces you to the scientific study of the English Language and allows you to examine human communication in different contexts. You’ll be taught by research-active academics working in cutting-edge areas.

In your first year you’ll be introduced to film criticism, genre and style. You’ll also explore the diversity of use of the English language including regional variants, pidgin and creole English, language and ethnicity, and slang and street English. Core modules in your second year focus on English grammar and the sounds of English. You can explore theories of how and why language developed and study language-related real-life problems such as plagiarism and crime investigation in forensic linguistics. You’ll also gain knowledge of film production and you’ll think more about European or US cinema.

In your final year you can follow modules in different topics, including child language and communication, clinical linguistics, gender and language, and formulaic language, informed by our academics’ own research specialisms. You’ll also have the opportunity to make your own video essay as one of your film modules.

This course examines current research and practice in software engineering. You will develop knowledge and skills in the models, methodologies, measures and tools that can be employed in software development considered as an engineering discipline.

This degree is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN) and explores in detail the scientific basis of nutrition, health promotion and disease prevention. On graduation you will become a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) and you can play an influential role in educating the public, promoting healthy eating and developing healthier food. In the first year you’ll study basic nutrition, food science and psychology concepts and develop a fundamental understanding of human physiology, biochemistry and cell biology. You’ll then move on to study more specialised areas such as disease pathophysiology, metabolism and how nutrition can play a key role in health and disease prevention throughout the lifecycle. You will also study modules related to food industry and employability including the role of the nutritionist in foodservice. In your final year you will undertake a two-week work experience and will study public health nutrition, sports nutrition, behaviour change and contemporary topics in nutrition. Our BA Philosophy and Media degree allows you to learn more about how various media function and to examine the philosophical issues surrounding our attempts to represent the world. You’ll develop practical and theoretical knowledge of how various media techniques are implemented, whilst exploring and challenging the assumptions that frame the way we think, act and see the world around us.

In your first year, you’ll be introduced to a variety of ways in which communication can be achieved. You will learn to think critically by examining reasoning and persuasion and how that might be inflected by the medium in which it is conveyed, including the use of rhetoric and propaganda. You’ll also study social and political philosophy, covering topics such as freedom of speech, as well as examine the nature of knowledge and reality. There is also a philosophy module dedicated to exploring the scope and limits film and literature in what they can represent about reality.

In your second year, you’ll be able to select areas on which to focus, such as on influential works of philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, the philosophy of mind, and social and political philosophy. There is also a philosophy of art module, which tackles the question of the relation between artistic representations (in various media) and reality. You’ll also gain knowledge of research methods in the communications industry and learn about publishing.

In your final year, you’ll delve deeper into the media industry and into more specialist areas of Philosophy, including the opportunity to develop your understanding of the nature of communication in the philosophy of language module, or on the nature of the representation of women in the module on feminist philosophy.

MA Contemporary Textiles is an award within the PG Art Programme at the School of Creative Arts. Within the postgraduate programme there is strong emphasis on professional practice and the real-world applications of art and design. You will develop key research skills and gain a good understanding of the work of other practitioners in your field.

Contemporary textiles has emerged as an innovative area of practice for artists, designers and makers, testing the boundaries of more traditional areas of art practice. This course gives you the opportunity to explore areas such as textiles and new materials, textiles and performance, and the connections between contemporary textiles, fashion and interior design. It provides students with an environment that encourages individuality and explores the breadth and diversity of contemporary textile practice. Students employ a wide range of traditional and innovative methods and techniques and through research and experimentation, build on skills already established to develop the personal identity of their practice.

The aim of the postgraduate programme is to equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding required to practice at an advanced level, to foster your creativity and enhance your employment opportunities. You will work alongside artists and designers who are involved with a wide variety of media and forms. Induction, seminars and social events for students and staff mean that you will be part of a friendly and supportive postgraduate community, which also includes film makers, musicians and professionals working in new media. 

Recent practitioners in contemporary textiles have explored performance-based work and film and lens-based media, combined textiles with digital media, and, as one of eight MAs, this course is well placed to help you question conventions and challenge the boundaries of contemporary textile practice. Our staff are experienced in research and professional practice, and you will also benefit from contributions from visiting artists, makers, curators and involvement with our international exhibitions programme.
