The MA Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching is offered by our Centre for Applied Language Research. Staff contributing to the programme are involved in:

On this BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree, you'll explore past and current socio-economic systems and discover how the world works. Learn quantitative tools, historical data, and the technical skills to analyse them. Philosophy modules will teach you logic and ethics, and how to critique the present order. You'll spend a year studying abroad to experience another culture and see a different world view.

On this broad, combined honours course, you’ll get a balanced education in all three Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) subjects. It is owned by the Philosophy department.

Learn French - a major international language with some 300 million speakers worldwide - while increasing your knowledge of politics. You’ll study abroad for a year to get complete proficiency in French and also take modules on political systems and French history.

On this BA Politics and French degree, you’ll start French at a level that matches your spoken and written ability, which helps ensure rapid progress. You’ll also have excellent resources to support you. The Centre for Language Study at Southampton has everything you need.

Study ancient history and history to learn about global perspectives on ancient, medieval and modern history. You'll be based in a thriving research environment at Southampton, and spend your third year abroad at a partner university. You'll look at the different ways historians have approached the past, and study different periods in history. You'll cover the development of historical debates, ways of imagining the past, and topics ranging from ancient history to the war on terror.

You'll also learn how to identify and excavate archaeological sites, extracting as much information as possible from materials and records.

Through the latest techniques and technologies, you'll investigate how our ancestors lived, from the earliest human origins, to Neolithic Britain, Ancient Egypt and the Medieval Middle East.

Archaeology is the study of the human past through its material remains, such as its:

Whether in the laboratory on a dig, you'll develop transferable skills through exploring questions about people in the past and in the present. This archaeology bachelor degree with year abroad explores world archaeology, on topics such as:
