This dynamic BA English and French course shows you the connections between literature, language and culture. Our English modules cover writing from around the world and its connection to politics, the arts, identity and more.

In your French studies, you can take modules that feed your love of history and culture, or you may choose to focus on linguistics. You can shape your degree to suit your interests or career aspirations.

You'll spend your year abroad at one of our partner universities in Europe, in Canada or in Guadeloupe, La Réunion or Martinique.

Study Film and English at Southampton and discover how we tell stories across both art forms. You'll analyse writing, from early poetry to the present day, and learn how to see films with a critical eye. You can view literature and films in new contexts, including performance, music, science, philosophy and more. A year abroad will add another dimension to your university experience.

In Film, you'll study familiar classics alongside contemporary cinema, and genres including:

You'll deepen your understanding and enjoyment of films and develop your critical thinking as part of a lively community.

Our English modules look at written English from across the world, in many social and cultural contexts.

You can examine both classical and popular novel adaptations in our specialised module. From Jane Austen to Harry Potter, you'll explore the close links between film and literature.

You'll spend your third year studying at one of our partner universities abroad. Your options include: South Korea, Sweden, Ireland or the Czech Republic – countries with their own distinctive film cultures.

With this degree, you’ll develop strong language skills in both French and Spanish and gain a comprehensive understanding of both cultures. You’ll also spend a year living and working abroad, building your fluency and considerably boosting your employment prospects.

Using our language development system, we’ll make sure you start at a level that matches your ability in French and Spanish. This means, if you’re a strong student, you can start one of these languages from scratch - and make rapid progress in both.

You’ll have the freedom to tailor your degree to areas that interest you. You could, for instance, take a third language, take modules from other subject areas, or explore more about French or Spanish linguistics, history and culture.

In your year abroad you can choose to:

• Take a work placement

You could choose to go to Spain, France, Switzerland or Latin America - we have links in Chile, Colombia and Mexico. Through our innovative scheme in Mexico, developed in partnership with the Mexican Education Ministry, you could work as a Language Resources Assistant in a University.

Some of the greatest mathematicians have also been philosophers, and vice versa. On this joint BA Philosophy and Mathematics degree you’ll explore the close relationship between the two, tackling some of the biggest questions in philosophy - is there a god? What is morality? What does it mean to be human? - while developing advanced maths skills. You'll get to spend a placement year abroad at a university in Europe.

Learn German - a major international language with over 100 million speakers worldwide - while increasing your knowledge of politics. You’ll study abroad for a year to get complete proficiency in German and also take modules on political systems and German history.

A special module in year 2 will make sure you’re ready for working and studying abroad in year 3.
