This course will enable you to pursue your interest in the history, archaeology and art of the ancient world. It looks at the societies and cultures of the ancient Mediterranean through their written texts, visual art and material remains, from grand temples, monuments and villas to the humble residues of everyday life.

You will benefit from many hands-on learning experiences, including handling authentic ancient coins, recreating the experience of a Greek symposium using replica vases, visiting historical sites and museums in the UK, and taking part in our annual classical play, which is staged at a professional theatre for a public audience of over a thousand people.

You will have the opportunity to study topics such as Greek democracy, the Roman cultural revolution under Augustus, visual representations of Greek myth, or the Roman Near East, in modules specifically focused on Greco-Roman history, art, archaeology and architecture.

Core first-year modules provide a grounding in approaches to Greek and Roman History and Material Culture; optional modules allow you to explore a range of other topics, including the option to learn an ancient language or take an external module.

This programme analyses European politics explicitly in the context of both International Relations (IR) and International Political Economy (IPE). It is designed for students keen to understand past and present international relations of Europe, and the EU, amidst times of crisis and in a constantly changing world.

The combination of IR, IPE and the EU makes this programme distinct from many others. The economic crisis in Europe, Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic provide an opportunity to explore how the EU is shaped internally and can respond externally to growing political, economic and societal challenges. This course examines the EU, its significance in and for the world system, its relationships with key developed and emerging countries and regions, and the various ways in which it engages with the international milieu on issues of global significance.

Big data and quantitative methods are transforming political processes and decisions in everyday life.

Local, national and international administrations are making ‘open data’ available to wide audiences; giant, world-level web organisations are putting more and more services in synergy; and some private companies or governments are developing strongly ideological projects in relation with big data. Therefore, there is a need for trained specialists who will have the capacity to compete and/or collaborate with strictly business or technique-oriented actors on the basis of sound knowledge from political and international studies.

Our programme provides you with an understanding of the implications of different approaches to issues concerning big data and public policy.

Are you interested in becoming an adept and successful communicator between different nations or cultures? This exciting course draws on cutting-edge academic research by a team of experts in translation, transnational and transcultural studies.

You will develop a rigorous theoretical understanding of translation, with the opportunity to produce your own translations and/or analyse and compare existing translations. The interdisciplinary programme examines translation between English and at least one of Chinese (standard Mandarin), French, German, Italian and Spanish in a cultural context. The research component is significant in this academic degree, which offers integrated research skills training and the possibility to do a final Dissertation on a research topic. If you prefer to get more translation practice, you can also opt for a final Dissertation comprising an original translation from a variety of genres or an analytical commentary.

After graduating, you will be well qualified to seek out work within linguistic and intercultural mediation, in the growing sector of language industry, or to apply for further study or applied research, including our Warwick’s own PhD programme in Translation and Transcultural Studies.

Research and write a 40,000-word Dissertation on a topic of your choice under the supervision of one of our internationally-leading experts. Suitable for students who already have considerable research skills and a clear idea of their own particular area of interest for further research.

Before you arrive, you will be matched to one or more of our expert supervisors and during the course. You will meet with them frequently for guidance on the conceptualisation, research and writing of your Dissertation. This will include reading and discussion of draft material.

You will also be expected to participate in the research culture of the School, for example by attending research seminars.

Astrophysics has a special flavor. With the arrival of space-based instrumentation and gravitational wave detection, some of the most exciting discoveries in your life are likely to come in astrophysics.

However, we can't conduct experiments on stars or galaxies as they're too far away and too big. Instead, we need to piece together explanations of what we see. This involves understanding the fundamental physics mechanics, quantum theory, relativity, thermodynamics and trying to work out what they imply for exoplanets, galaxies, stars and the Universe as a whole.

The course covers the principles of physics and their application to explain astrophysical phenomena. In your first year, you will study the classification of astrophysical objects and how we observe them. During the second year, you will study the solar system and stars in some detail. In the third and fourth years, you can study a range of topics including cosmology, exoplanets, the physics of compact objects (black holes, neutron stars and white dwarfs), general relativity and our Sun.

You will be mentored by, and work on projects with, astrophysicists.

Why are ‘private troubles’ also ‘public issues’? This course enables you to explore and answer questions just like this. The course will appeal if you are interested in how social life shapes individuals’ experiences of the world around us.

From across sociology and allied social sciences, you will gain a thorough understanding of theories and methodologies. Then you will have the opportunity to tailor your programme to your own specific interests through our wide range of options.

Your period of study will involve you examining individuals’ experiences, and encounters with structures and institutions; reading new empirical research; exploring social theories; and assessing innovative methodologies.

You will receive practical and theoretical training in two core modules and further specialisation as well as broader knowledge in six optional modules of your choice. Teaching at Master’s level places greater emphasis on practical work than at undergraduate level. This includes coursework reports and learning state-of-the-art specialised research subfields.

After completing successfully the taught portion of the course, you will continue for a further ten weeks to put your knowledge into practice through a dissertation.

By studying linguistics together with Italian, you will explore the fascinating human capacity for language, while also building your fluency in Italian. As a linguist, you will learn about the structure and function of language, and about relationships between language and society.

You will also study and practice written and oral communication in Italian, and learn broadly about communicating across languages and cultures. Your skills in linguistic analysis will support your language learning, and your knowledge of Italian will complement your work as a linguist. This course opens many career opportunities that require the knowledge and skills of both a modern language and a deep understanding of language, culture and communication.

Study abroad

If you wish to spend a year abroad (which we thoroughly recommend), this will take place in your third year, meaning that you will complete your degree in four years instead of three. All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities. This course engages you in the systematic study of language with a specific focus on English. You will learn to analyse the structure of English, and the ways people use English to structure the world.

You will explore the evolution of English from a set of dialects on an island to a global lingua franca, and examine ways that English continues to change today. You will learn more generally about how language is formed, acquired, learned, and used. You will develop an extensive set of qualitative and quantitative research skills, and practise oral and written communication intensively.

You will be eminently employable in careers ranging from journalism, media, publishing and marketing to teaching English internationally, and may pursue further study toward fields like speech pathology or speech recognition.

If you wish to spend a year abroad (which we thoroughly recommend), this will take place in your third year, meaning that you will complete your degree in four years instead of three. All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities.

Students who elect not to complete the year abroad, or who do not academically qualify for it, may complete the course without a year abroad.
