Our Visual and Material Culture of Ancient Rome MA courses provide a thorough preparation in research techniques if you are considering further research in the fields of art, numismatics or epigraphy, or are working on an historical topic that involves the consideration of material evidence. It will also provide a detailed understanding of ancient visual and material culture to prepare you if you are aiming to enter a career in museums and curatorial work, or in education.

We offer you the chance to create a personal programme of study by drawing from all the postgraduate modules offered by our LLMs in International Development Law and Human Rights, International Economic Law, International Commercial Law, and International Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation.

You can also choose a number of options from a list of modules from other departments, subject to availability and approval. You will also develop a dissertation on a topic to be agreed and prepared with guidance from an assigned supervisor.

This MSc offers you the opportunity to study key business areas, whilst specialising in the field of marketing. Modules taught by our expert lecturers will give you a grounding in the foundational areas of business, as well as offering you the chance to gain specific insight through marketing modules of your choosing.

There is a choice of Dissertation or Business in Practice route. If you are considering further academic study (PhD) and you would like the opportunity to research a topic relating to marketing, the dissertation enables you to test and apply the techniques and theories you have gained.

The MA in Applied Theatre: Arts, Action, Change is a taught postgraduate degree that addresses contemporary practice in applied theatre and socially engaged performance. It invites you to explore, make and interrogate performance practices that are broadly concerned with contributing to social change in a variety of settings (e.g. criminal justice, theatre for development, homelessness, learning disability, schools, the elderly and healthcare). With a strong focus on professional practice and development, the degree addresses the ways in which performance modes can contribute to different applied, community and institutional settings nationally and internationally.

It investigates the claims made about performance and its potential to be transformative and rehabilitative and tests these claims through close consideration of contemporary practices in the field. It also addresses the political and ethical implications that come into play and the importance of constantly questioning what is at stake when working in specific contexts. It explores what it means to be an artist working for change and aims to develop skills of project design, facilitation and evaluation.

This degree will help you to:

• Understand a range of socially-engaged forms of theatre and performance and how these vary in response to different contexts
• Develop practical skills specific to applied theatre environments that are responsive to the needs of different types of organisations
• Understand your own practice, while learning to design, manage and evaluate projects better, demonstrating an awareness of the possibilities and limitations of live performance and digital media in interventionist practices

This MA encourages you to place developments within medical theory and practice in a broad social and cultural framework, and use a wide range of sources available to the historian of medicine (such as medical texts, practice records, diaries, case records, public health reports and health propaganda, and visual sources). Most modules are taught by a team of experts, ensuring that you are exposed to as many different viewpoints and approaches as possible.

The Term One core module ‘Themes and Methods in Medical History’ is designed to introduce you to some of the main historiographical approaches and debates within the history of medicine from the early modern period to the twenty-first century. The module focuses on the evolution of ideas, institutions and practices within medicine, the reception of new approaches and lay responses, the structure of medical practice and the medical professions, and the scientific, social and cultural context of medical intervention.

The Term Two core module, 'Matters of Life and Death' focuses on recent contributions to the discipline, providing you with the opportunity to discuss in depth methodologies and approaches, the research questions underpinning the work and theoretical frameworks, while also relating the seminars to your interests and dissertation research. By studying these texts, you will actively engage with the wide range of sources available.

The final key element is the dissertation - here you have a large amount of freedom to develop a project of your own choice with help and guidance from your supervisor who will meet with you throughout the third term. Throughout the year, you will be able to take advantage of the Department’s six research centres, especially the Centre for the History of Medicine, and participate in the lively schedule of academic research seminars, lectures and conferences.

The programme will appeal equally to those wishing to undertake further postgraduate study and those pursuing a career outside of the University, equipping you with research, writing and critical thinking skills vital in a range of professions.

Designed to bring out the beauty and universality of physics, our flexible Physics course provides broad and in-depth teaching that's informed by our research.

Core modules introduce and develop the fundamental concepts, such as those of quantum theory and electromagnetism, and cover the mathematics used in physics. Optional modules provide opportunities to see how the basic concepts can explain the phenomena we observe.

For the final year project, you will work as a member of one of the research groups on a year-long project to explore aspects that are not yet fully understood. We encourage you to apply for summer placements and projects, which enable you to complete a small research project supervised by a member of the academic staff.

You will be taught by world-leading researchers in a supportive environment, where learning spaces – including breakout areas and common spaces – are all geared towards you sharing, collaborating and exploring your academic curiosity.

Pure Mathematics modules combine the work of some of the world’s greatest thinkers, while Applied Mathematics addresses real-world problems in biology, data science, climate science and finance. Many third and fourth-year modules offer glimpses of the latest research.

The four-year MMath shares the same core as the BSc but enables you to explore areas of interest in greater depth, both through specialised fourth year modules and via a substantial Research or Maths-in-Action project.

This programme draws on our long-established strengths in Continental Philosophy. It is distinctive in offering an unusually broad range of module options specifically in this area of philosophy. Modules cover 19th and 20th century Continental Philosophy, major figures and themes, as well as more specialised or less mainstream topics drawing on individual research strengths.

Because of the breadth of our expertise in this area, whichever module options you choose, you will be taught by world leaders in their respective fields.

This course is designed for technically-minded graduates with a background in computer science, mathematics or the physical sciences.

It provides a comprehensive preparation for the use of cutting-edge techniques in industry, though its research focus also makes it an excellent starting point for research career, through PhD study or in a commercial setting.

If you are interested in questioning the concepts of gender and development, and giving priority to issues and debates identified within specific countries – rather than relying on predominantly western literature – then this is the programme for you. It is an international, interdisciplinary and analytical course. It does not assume that development is about the ‘third world’ modelling itself on the west, nor about women modelling themselves on men.
