Why do bad ideas become policy and good ideas languish for years? Why do governments respond differently to global policy challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic? Governments are facing more complex demands every day. If you want to make a difference in the world, you need to understand the limits and possibilities of how policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated.

This programme will give you an advanced understanding of the major theories and concepts of governance, public management, and public policy. You will work with world leading experts on transnational policy making and gain a practice focused understanding of why and how ideas are turned into public policy.

This course engages you in the systematic study of language with a specific focus on English. You will learn to analyse the structure of English, and the ways people use English to structure the world.

You will explore the evolution of English from a set of dialects on an island to a global lingua franca, and examine ways that English continues to change today. You will learn more generally about how language is formed, acquired, learned, and used. You will develop an extensive set of qualitative and quantitative research skills, and practise oral and written communication intensively.

You will be eminently employable in careers ranging from journalism, media, publishing and marketing to teaching English internationally, and may pursue further study toward fields like speech pathology or speech recognition.

Study abroad

If you wish to spend a year abroad (which we thoroughly recommend), this will take place in your third year, meaning that you will complete your degree in four years instead of three. All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities.

The Student Mobility Team offers support for these activities, and the Department's dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance. Students who elect not to complete the year abroad, or who do not academically qualify for it, may complete the course without a year abroad.

Our Advanced Mechanical Engineering MSc focuses on the key skills required by the modern mechanical engineer.

You will develop the versatility and depth of knowledge to deal with new and unusual challenges across a wide range of disciplines, within engineering and beyond. Teaching is underpinned by research in automotive systems, biomedical engineering, solid and fluid mechanics, electrical and thermal energy systems, energy conversion/storage and sustainable cities.

You will also complete an individual research project – an in-depth experimental, theoretical or computational investigation of a topic chosen by you in conjunction with your academic supervisor.

Economics is at the core of Global Sustainable Development (GSD). You will critically analyse economic models and theories of sustainable development through quantitative and qualitative approaches. Economics modules will provide you with an essential background in micro and macro economics, as well as methodologies for statistical analysis.

Meanwhile, your studies in GSD will empower you to consider the human and environmental implications of development. You will pose challenging questions about climate change, biodiversity, gender equality, and other core components of sustainability. Put together, Economic Studies and GSD encourages you to take a new perspective on our changing global economy.

You may choose to apply for an intercalated year spent either studying abroad or on a work placement (subject to you meeting departmental academic requirements). This will mean extending your course to four years.

If you want to extend your learning and broaden your perspective by studying abroad for a year, Warwick has partnerships with universities across the world. You will spend your first and second years at Warwick, studying abroad in your third year. You will then return to Warwick for your final year.

The MA in World Literature at Warwick draws on our department’s renowned expertise in theoretically-driven world-literary and postcolonial studies to offer a year-long course that is unique in the UK.

Considering you as a future scholar and global citizen, this MA will immerse you in the study of writing and culture from across the globe. You will take a core module in the methodology and theory of world literature, choose from a range of modules that address issues in modern and contemporary world literature, and write a dissertation on an (approved) topic of your choice with a specialised supervisor.

As our global reach becomes increasingly important, there is a need and opportunity for organisations to connect together to deliver added value to the consumer through interlinked supply chains and efficient logistics.  

The central content is the concept of a supply network: constructing the relationships that bring it into being; commissioning the technologies that enable it to operate; managing the input, the material and the information flow; and distributing the product.  

During the course, you will develop the skills to evaluate, manage, and improve supply chain processes. You will learn to design and develop strategy, as well as understanding the operational functions of businesses.

Accredited by the Institute of Export, this MSc delivers a thorough understanding of the management and operational requirements necessary to trade successfully in international markets.

The programme is heavily focused on the application of theory into practice and how the skills developed throughout your studies will be used to best advantage in a professional environment. You will learn how international companies operate, and will develop the skills to enable your involvement in the whole process from initial engagement with a new market, right through to the delivery of a product or service.

Throughout the year, you will learn to identify business opportunities, formulate strategic options, and define business-winning propositions, as well as learning to manage, lead change, and improve operational and supply chain processes.

The International Trade, Strategy and Operations MSc investigates and analyses real-world applications. It is set within a truly global context due to the international nature of case studies and examples which illustrate the issues and challenges facing a range of stakeholders, from businesses at a micro-level, to governmental bodies at a macro-level. Teaching from the course team will be both research and experience led, as many of the course team members are active research participants and/or have experience of engaging with business in a variety of areas on an international scale.

This course will appeal equally to those students with a background in international trade, strategy or operations who wish to specialise further in these areas and students from a wide range of other disciplines who wish to pursue a career in the international field.

This MA will enable you to study Philosophy at an advanced level, offering an extensive range of optional modules that give you the flexibility and the freedom to explore your own philosophical interests. The breadth and depth of research expertise in the Philosophy department means that we can offer you an unusually broad range of options for Master’s level study.

The Department has strengths across all core areas of analytic philosophy and continental philosophy, with particular strengths in: Philosophy of Mind and Psychology, Epistemology, Aesthetics, Moral and Political Philosophy, Post-Kantian Continental Philosophy, and 20th Century Continental Philosophy.

Astrophysics has a special flavour. With the arrival of space-based instrumentation and gravitational wave detection, some of the most exciting discoveries in your lifetime are likely to come in astrophysics.

However, we can't conduct experiments on stars or galaxies as they're too far away and too big. Instead, we need to piece together explanations of what we see. This involves understanding the fundamental physics - mechanics, quantum theory, relativity, thermodynamics - and trying to work out what they imply for exoplanets, galaxies, stars, and the Universe as a whole.

The course covers the principles of physics and their application to explain astrophysical phenomena. In your first year, you will study the classification of astrophysical objects and how we observe them. During the second year, you will study the solar system and stars in some detail. In the third and fourth years, you can study a range of topics including cosmology, exoplanets, the physics of compact objects (black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs), general relativity, and our Sun.

You will be mentored by, and work on projects with, astrophysicists.

Political Theory, Comparative Politics and the study of Political Systems provide the core of this degree, then you can choose options across the full range of modules or focus on specific pathways.

You will tackle questions relating to the nature and distribution of power, the advantages and disadvantages of different political systems, gendered and racialized aspects of politics, and the role of ideology in determining political outcomes. You will critique how politics works in a number of different nations and question the appropriate level to analyze politics from the individual to the global system.

You will also consider how the work of political theorists can help explain the ways in which politicians intervene in questions of economy, law-making, conflict and the regulation of our daily lives. You will apply these ideas to everyday political problems such as immigration, poverty, war and climate change.
