As a student on the Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree, you will continue to study the same modules as those on the Electronic Engineering programme until the end of the second year. Education plays a variety of often contradictory roles in public debates, policy discourses, and academic research related to globalisation and international development. Education may be seen as the silver bullet, the solution to global inequalities and the vehicle for economic and social development. Alternatively, education is blamed for not delivering its promise, or even for reproducing or exacerbating the very problems it was supposed to solve. Education systems and institutions are themselves sites which are affected by patterns of globalisation and policy changes regarding development and aid.

Increasingly we are moving into a ‘post-development’ era, where it is no longer possible to separate the globe into clear-cut regions that are designated as ‘developed’ and ‘developing’: local, regional and international connections and transitions demand that we re-focus attempts to understand and theorise the role of education in contemporary society. Education policy and practice faces the imperative of adapting to enhanced mobility and immobility, changing political regimes, and the ever-shifting relationship between education and social change.

MA Global Education and International Development addresses a complex array of interconnected challenges and issues in relation to education, understood in its broadest sense. The programme brings together theoretical and conceptual challenges with applied considerations for education practitioners and development interventions. The MA includes an option to take a placement module which enhances your professional skills and employability.

Please note that if you wish to study on a part time basis you should be aware that most core modules are taught during the normal working day and there is no out of hours provision. If this is a consideration for you please contact us prior to applying so that we can advise you further.

Skills from this degree

  • Critically appraise ideas and engage with academic debate on issues related to globalisation, international development and education
  • Develop your capacity for advancing evidence-based arguments and drawing conclusions that are supported by in-depth data analysis
  • Expand your intellectual worldview with regard to the role of education in, and the connections between, globalisation and international development
  • Develop the critical skills and intellectual rigour required to review diverse bodies of research and analyse/ synthesise their findings. Learn to choose appropriate methodologies and engage in academic writing at a dissertation level
  • Understand past, current and future academic and policy discourses around ‘what works’ in education and development, with particular reference to the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Enhance your breadth of knowledge of education systems and contexts

This degree, which is accredited by the British Psychological Society, draws on Warwick’s research strengths and agendas across the Department of Psychology and Education Studies. The issues of learning and teaching are key in both disciplines, making them a natural academic combination.

If you are interested in a career working with children, young people, schools and families, the course will give you an understanding of education, development, and behavior from a psychological perspective.

Study abroad

In an interconnected world, employers greatly value an international perspective. Studying abroad provides you with a first-hand opportunity to explore how culture influences psychological processes and develop a range of valuable skills that give you a competitive advantage in the graduate market.

Our Department is part of the University’s large global network of exchange partners, with long-standing agreements with prestigious universities around the world. A particularly popular Warwick option is with Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, acknowledged as one of the world’s top universities.

Our students have previously undertaken study abroad opportunities in Brazil, China, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Spain and the USA. Typically, when students choose to study abroad, they apply in their second year for the third year of study at a partner institution. Students then return to Warwick for their final year.

Explore two rich and diverse literary and cultural traditions while developing your fluency in French. There is a core French language module in every year of study.

First-year core modules will introduce you to French literature and culture, English literature, and comparative literatures.

In your intermediate and final years all English and French optional modules are open to you, spanning topics from literature and critical theory to history, politics, philosophy and film. In your final year, you can choose to write a dissertation on comparative French and English literature. You will normally spend your second or third year of study consolidating your language skills abroad.

You will graduate as a highly qualified linguist with advanced intercultural skills, a deep understanding of key issues and developments in France’s past and present, as well as an advanced knowledge of French, English, and comparative literatures.

Study abroad

We strongly recommend that you take a year abroad as part of your modern languages degree, if they are able to. If you are unable to take a year abroad you will move to a three-year degree. You will be required to complete further language reinforcement work. You will also be encouraged to spend time abroad in other ways, during vacation times.

You will usually spend your year abroad doing one of three things:

  • Working as a language assistant teaching English in a primary or secondary school
  • Studying full-time at a partner university in your chosen country
  • On a work placement

By studying linguistics together with Chinese, you will explore the fascinating human capacity for language, while also building your fluency in Chinese. As a linguist, you will learn about the structure and function of language, and about relationships between language and society.

You will also study and practice written and oral communication in Chinese, and learn broadly about communicating across languages and cultures. Your skills in linguistic analysis will support your language learning, and your knowledge of Chinese will complement your work as a linguist. This course opens many career opportunities that require the knowledge and skills of both a modern language and a deep understanding of language, culture and communication.

(75% linguistics, 25% Chinese).

Study abroad

  • If you wish to spend a year abroad (which we thoroughly recommend), this will take place in your third year, meaning that you will complete your degree in four years instead of three. All students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities.
  • The Student Mobility Team offers support for these activities, and the Department's dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance.
