History and French combines wide-ranging historical study with the exploration of French language and culture.

You'll develop your language skills, with a focus on becoming a high-level communicator. Your advanced skills in French will allow you new insights into the forces that have shaped modern societies and cultures as well as the issues and debates that prevail in France today. You'll choose from a wide and exciting range of option modules in History spanning both time and place.

You'll join two departments which are highly respected for their research, and you'll graduate with the ability to navigate international and multilingual environments with confidence and professionalism.

Biochemistry sits at the boundary between the physical and life sciences. It concerns the molecular basis of health and disease, contributing to the discovery of new medicines, the growth of biotechnology, and the feeding of a growing population.

You will learn how knowledge of DNA sequences and appreciation of the structure and function of proteins are enabling us to better understand how living systems work, guiding the design of drugs to combat disease, and the engineering of biomolecules to enhance industrial processes.

You’ll work in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry and experience their excellent facilities for teaching and research. Both Departments provide you with the opportunity to learn in new, spacious and modern teaching laboratories which provide excellent facilities for practicals and small group project work, alongside state-of-the-art computing facilities.

The integrated Masters course introduces a four-year programme that specifically focuses on the skills needed for a career as a research scientist. During this time you will carry out an extended project and learn specialised techniques; you will gain experience in a research lab doing pioneering work at the forefront of their field. You will also undertake specialist research training and take Masters-level modules.

Our distinctive MA in Early Modern History combines thorough research training with opportunities to explore new approaches to the history of early modern Britain, other European countries and their overseas empires.

Our MA in Modern History combines an advanced level introduction to the methodologies and techniques of modern history with a wide range of thematic modules exploring the 18th to 21st centuries.

You'll gain a sound understanding of various topics of your choice from the modern period, from the history of moving images to the politics of past injustices. You'll analyse important historiographical developments and their impact on modern historical study. Finally, you'll develop practical skills which are not only essential to your studies, but will also prepare you for a diverse range of careers.
