Material culture tells the story of people and their things: allowing us insights into the significance that objects held for people in the past.

Interweaving practical and theoretical approaches to material culture, this course explores ethnoarchaeological and experimental archaeological approaches to objects, alongside functional analyses of a broad range of artefact types.

You will discover the theories underpinning our understanding of the material world while developing invaluable practical skills such as designing and executing your own experimental archaeology project, the analysis of microscopic wear and residue traces, working with objects from excavations and museum collections or making a short documentary film for the heritage sector.

Whatever your period of interest is, this course will equip you with the skills and experience you need to begin a career in cultural heritage, academia, or commercial archaeology.

Combine the study of French and Spanish with investigations into the nature of language itself. Spend a year abroad studying, working or teaching in Spanish and French-speaking countries, consolidating your language skills.

You'll be taught in French and Spanish, so you'll become confident using your languages as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of French and Spanish culture and societies which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in both languages.

Your communication skills will be complemented by investigations into the science and structure of language through a range of linguistics modules. The course has flexibility in terms of how much French, Spanish and linguistics content you study over the four years. Bioarchaeology at York combines advanced osteoarchaeological techniques with the molecular analysis of human remains. You'll be encouraged to immerse yourself in the study of stable isotopes, lipid residue analysis, palaeoproteomics and ancient DNA – and play an active role in the development of new techniques in this constantly evolving branch of archaeology.

We offer advanced training in human osteoarchaeology, delivered by the UK’s leading practitioners, and get the chance to study ancient biomolecules in world-class facilities. The course offers a unique opportunity to combine bioarchaeology with complementary subjects and tailor a course to suit your interests. We also offer training in biomolecular analysis of artefacts (ceramics), other biological remains (animal bones, shells and plants) and historical archives (parchment).

You'll have an opportunity to use a wide range of in-house analytical equipment, take part in cutting-edge science and build essential practical skills whilst working alongside leading researchers and academics in a diverse range of specialisms. You'll also get the chance to work on research projects with original materials that are often ‘fresh out of the ground’, and thus contribute to pioneering research.

With access to the latest computer design labs, multi-speaker surround sound systems, multimedia studios and an anechoic chamber you’ll be able to explore synthesiser technology, MIDI, audio recording, sampling and digital audio signal processing. You’ll not just learn how this technology is applied in making and recording music, but also use your engineering expertise to design and build the next generation of audio technology.

The BEng is a fully-accredited engineering course which combines professional electronics with audio and music technology, and draws on the expertise of researchers in the University of York AudioLab.

Architecture is fundamental to human survival and living in the world. You'll investigate the exact nature of our relationship with art and architecture, which has been much disputed by architectural historians and theorists. At York we enable you to explore the most exciting and cutting-edge, as well as traditional and accepted, ideas and theories around art and architecture.

Our flexible course has exceptional historical and geographical breadth and depth. You’ll learn to read architecture critically, and to think about it beyond the study of individual buildings. We encourage you to engage with architecture as metaphor, and with interiors, exteriors, materials and materiality, urbanism, patronage, and design process.
