Recordings and productions are the dominant way of engaging with music of all types. This program explores the skills and knowledge relevant to this important musical activity, as well as understanding how it affects music more broadly.

You'll study practical, theoretical and analytical aspects of the creation, perception and reception of audio productions. You'll take an interdisciplinary approach, examining how creative studio practice is informed by science and engineering (acoustics, psychoacoustics, electroacoustics, signal processing) as well as composition, performance and musicology.

The course combines a very broad view of the techniques and applications of production for audio media with the subsequent development of more tightly focussed individual skills and scholarship. You'll encounter a range of possible projects, from the creation of entirely synthetic material using computer-based techniques to the successful capture of acoustic performances, as well as the restoration and reconstruction of existing audio heritage.

Nanotechnology is revolutionising electronic engineering.

Nanotechnology encompasses the design and study of devices on a scale of less than 100nm - barely a few hundred atoms across. From ultra-high-speed processors to super accurate sensors, nano-scale devices are transforming science and technology across a broad spectrum of fields, including microelectronics, data storage, medicine and the environment.

Drawing on the expertise of nanotechnology research groups at York, this course emphasises those areas of nanotechnology directly relevant to contemporary electronics. It forms part of a broad and strong core programme in electronics and provides ‘hands-on’ opportunities to build and characterise nanoscale devices.

You'll graduate with the knowledge required to operate with confidence - as a designer, researcher or manager - in the rapidly-expanding world of nanotechnology.

Our Interactive Media BSc will give you the power to create the new types of interactive media content that are transforming our society and culture. The unique multidisciplinary degree brings together technical, creative and socio-cultural perspectives on interactive media. You will be supported to develop your creativity, to acquire technical skills needed in the production of interactive media, and to have the ability to analyse and assess the impact of interactive media upon individuals and society as a whole.

The degree combines creativity with technical work, user experience design with computer programming, and human-computer interaction with critical contextual analysis of digital culture and society. You will gain hands-on experience of the latest digital technologies, study the theory and practice behind mediated interaction, and learn to assess the cultural implications of contemporary media developments. You may have the opportunity to find and secure a placement year in industry between years two and three of your course. Computer Science is founded upon Maths, and the study of the two together allows you to explore topics core to both whilst gaining an insight into how they intersect.
