Explore what crime means in our culture and society and how it affects our lives.

You'll be taught in German and Spanish, so you'll become confident using your languages as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of German and Spanish culture and societies which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in both languages.

Your communication skills will be complemented by investigations into the science and structure of language through a range of linguistics modules. The course has flexibility in terms of how much German, Spanish and linguistics content you study over the four years. Environment, Economics and Ecology is a unique interdisciplinary degree that advances your critical abilities to tackle real-world environmental challenges, manage economic and social pressures in a sustainable manner, and integrate the benefits that people derive from the environment into policy decisions and practice.

It focuses on ecosystem services as the linkages between human and natural systems, and the need for a holistic socio-ecological approach to understand challenges and solutions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Funerary archaeology combines analysis of human remains with their archaeological context to take a truly interdisciplinary approach to studying both life and death in the past.

Our course will enable you to use the latest techniques and equipment to build key, practical knowledge and explore the varied archaeological and methodological approaches to funerary archaeology. You'll have the chance to develop your skills in a range of different methods and techniques, but all centred on learning how to investigate death and burial in the past.

The flexible nature of the course enables you to pursue your own particular period or methodological interests by selecting modules that appeal to your research interests. You'll work alongside internationally renowned specialists and gain 'hands on' experience of the analysis of human remains. You'll get the chance to learn through field trips to local museums and relevant sites, such as the prehistoric monuments in the Yorkshire Wolds.

While learning the technical, practical and aesthetic principles of lighting, you'll work with industry-standard equipment, in our creative and supportive environment. You’ll gain technical experience and will develop and shoot your own project to high professional standards.

We'll teach you through a mix of workshops, lectures, screenings and masterclasses with leading academics and industry professionals. Our focus on practical group projects, with hands-on work, will prepare you for a career collaborating with others on set and on location.

You'll develop essential expertise for meeting the challenges of a career in film and television. Our graduates have gone on to roles in British and European film industries, and in film, TV and commercial production in China, Latin America and the Middle East.

The primary way we experience the music we enjoy and find fascinating, whether it was written centuries ago or released just last week, is through sound recording.
Capturing music to a professional standard requires a combination of technical and musical expertise. A successful career in music production demands practical, engineering and scientific knowledge of the recording process, as well as a deep understanding of music creativity, practice, and entrepreneurship.

This course acknowledges that music and production are no longer separate activities. At its heart is a contemporary view of music production and associated audio professions that recognises the dramatic and ongoing changes in the recording and media industries in recent years. You'll have an opportunity to create an individual set of intellectual, technical and creative skills from a core programme of artistic and technical development.

You'll cover a range of production technologies and techniques aligned to a wide variety of music including popular, rock, electronic, classical, contemporary, and non-western music. You will study audio engineering and music technology subjects, gain practical recording experience, and engage with music theory and practice.

Environmental geography focuses on the physical environment and its effect on humans.

Understanding the integration of physical and environmental geography has never been more important than it is today to address the environmental challenges facing the world.

This course covers aspects of physical geography such as sea level change, glacial and coastal environments and environmental hazards. It also covers other areas of environmental geography such as biogeography, Geographical Information Systems and sustainability. You'll have opportunities to study the human impacts on the environment through the study of natural resource management, environmental law and policy and environmental economics.

Develop your mathematical and statistical skills and prepare for a career in quantitative business analysis.

You'll learn to use sophisticated tools from a broad range of mathematical disciplines, such as calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, to sharpen your mathematical and statistical reasoning. Alongside this, you'll develop an in-depth knowledge of the context in which business analysts, quantitative finance officers ('quants') and operations managers work.

You'll expand your knowledge of theoretical concepts, with a particular focus on finance and operations, and apply the techniques you learn to practical business problems.

This course is taught in collaboration by the Department of Mathematics and the York Management School.

Our BSc Mathematics and Physics program gives you access to the combined expertise of the Departments of Physics and Mathematics. Our specialist teaching emphasises the mathematical structure of physical theory, providing a strong basis on which to build a comprehensive understanding of modern physics.

You'll work with dedicated staff, all of whom are engaged in current research and many are world leaders in their field. You will benefit from training in cutting-edge mathematical and theoretical physics techniques, and use these to probe the nature of physical reality and push the boundaries of research.
