Our course will provide you with a detailed foundation in the key theories and questions in sociolinguistics, while giving you practical training in the techniques, methodologies, and quantitative analysis methods associated with this field.

You’ll analyse the ways in which social factors affect language, and investigate the social, geographical and stylistic differences in spoken language. You'll have the opportunity to develop your interest in areas including language change, language and gender, attitudes to language, language planning, bilingualism and sociophonetics. You will be able to study contemporary and historical data.

Funerary archaeology combines analysis of human remains with their archaeological context to take a truly interdisciplinary approach to studying both life and death in the past.

Our course will enable you to use the latest techniques and equipment to build key, practical knowledge and explore the varied archaeological and methodological approaches to funerary archaeology. You'll have the chance to develop your skills in a range of different methods and techniques, but all centred on learning how to investigate death and burial in the past.

The flexible nature of the course enables you to pursue your own particular period or methodological interests by selecting modules that appeal to your research interests. You'll work alongside internationally renowned specialists and gain 'hands on' experience of the analysis of human remains. You'll get the chance to learn through field trips to local museums and relevant sites, such as the prehistoric monuments in the Yorkshire Wolds.

On this flexible course you'll study with leading experts in their field from the Departments of Archaeology, English, History, History of Art, Sociology and the Centre for Women’s Studies. We'll introduce you to the various means by which different disciplines conceptualise and analyse the period. You can construct a programme that suits your interests and develops your transferable skills in interdisciplinary research.

Our broad and principled approach to computer science will give you a thorough grounding in theory as well as practical skills, helping you to solve real-world problems.

You will study systems at different levels of abstraction, including digital hardware architectures, low level programming, operating systems, intelligent systems, compilers and high level languages. The MEng is a fully accredited engineering course which combines professional electronics with audio and music technology.

You'll experience a large team software engineering multimedia project, as well as managing a substantial individual project, allowing you to develop the knowledge and skills required to become a leader in the industry. Environment, Economics and Ecology is a unique interdisciplinary degree that advances your critical abilities to tackle real-world environmental challenges, manage economic and social pressures in a sustainable manner, and integrate the benefits that people derive from the environment into policy decisions and practice.

It focuses on ecosystem services as the linkages between human and natural systems, and the need for a holistic socio-ecological approach to understand challenges and solutions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The MSc in Clinical Anatomy provides unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the practical and in-depth study of clinical anatomy. The programme is built around core dissection-based modules covering the whole body. You will be encouraged to be a self-directed learner and challenge your knowledge and ways of thinking about the human body.

In this programme, you will carry out whole-body dissection in small groups during formal dissection sessions, and at your own pace in your own self-directed learning time, using cadavers with both Thiel, that ensures material is as close to living tissue as possible, and Formalin, that keeps the material in defined anatomical relationships.

You will have the unique opportunity to learn from experts in their field who are at the forefront of new developments in clinical anatomy, visiting surgeons and consultants. As well as learning from their expertise, you will be challenged to think differently and learn how to become a self-directed learner as you continue to develop your anatomy knowledge throughout your clinical career – and ultimately make a difference to patients’ lives.

You will also benefit from guest seminars from visiting surgeons and consultants, who will bring patient cases to share with you, so you can apply your knowledge within a clinical context. These experts come from a range of specialities including plastic, thoracic and orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, radiologists and emergency medicine doctors.

You can choose to study full-time for one year, or part-time over two or three years to fit around your work and home life.

Our course emphasises a high level of craft and creativity, combined with critical thought and collaboration. You'll gain scientific and technical training with hands-on experience of visual effects systems, programme creation and artistic decision-making.

We'll teach you through a mix of workshops, lectures, screenings and masterclasses with leading academics and industry professionals. On this MA you can focus on production-orientated work. Alternatively you can focus on formal research into the technologies behind postproduction systems and apply for the MSc Film and Television Production with Visual Effects.
