This course is for students from around the world who wish to pursue a career in teaching foreign languages. It will extend your knowledge of the processes that underpin and facilitate foreign language learning.

The course is designed for experienced language teachers. You should have at least 12 months' experience of full-time, classroom-based teaching (or equivalent).
The one-year programme is designed for students with at least one years teaching experience who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning of any second or foreign language/s. It is expected that students will already have an understanding of the main approaches to language teaching and language analysis. The course will provide rich opportunities for reflection on practice, and for the development of the understanding underlying principles and theories of language teaching and learning. There is also a broad range of option modules to choose from. Teaching and learning activities include presentations by the tutor, small group discussions and practical activities (individual and pair work). Summative assessments take the form of written assignments, exams, oral presentations and dissertations.

Develop your knowledge of approaches to English language teaching to facilitate better teaching practice.

This course will provide you with the tools and resources you need to evaluate current issues and key trends in language learning and teaching in a range of contexts, and consider their application in classroom instruction, assessment, materials development and the English language curriculum. You'll also learn how to conduct your own research.

You'll be taught in Italian from the start, so you'll become confident using Italian as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of Italian culture and society which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator.

Your communication skills and intercultural understanding will be complemented by studying linguistics. In studying linguistics you will learn the science behind how we communicate. You’ll engage with the study of language on a conceptual level as well as the detailed level of raw linguistic data. The course has flexibility in terms of how much Italian and linguistics content you study. Your knowledge and understanding of how a language works, and how we communicate, will give you a solid foundation for many careers. Microorganisms are an important but often overlooked form of life. They are causative agents of many diseases, but can also be harnessed to produce a wide range of useful products including antibiotics and other medicines. Microbes are vital for providing multiple ecosystem services and are crucial for agricultural systems, whether via the microbes in the soil, those associated with plants, or in the context of providing the basis for our understanding of genetic modification. They can be used to produce biofuels, provide the means to decontaminate polluted environments and act as important models for understanding biological processes. At York, you will learn about the practical application of biological knowledge to economically important areas, such as health, food and the environment.

The integrated Masters course introduces a four-year programme that specifically focuses on the skills needed for a career as a research scientist. During this time you work with researchers within one of the UK’s top bioscience departments to learn specialised techniques; you will gain experience in a research lab doing pioneering work at the forefront of their field. You also undertake specialist research training and take Masters-level modules.

Develop an in-depth understanding of the nature of contemporary armed conflicts, transitions from war to peace, and challenges of post-war peacebuilding.

Explore the context of contemporary armed conflict and war, and subsequently how peace is forged at the local and national levels, all the time taking into account the interplay between domestic and international actors.

You'll have the opportunity to undertake a fieldwork placement, where you'll apply your skills to a professional setting and conduct research to inform your dissertation. This is a unique opportunity to gain first-hand understanding of, and approaches to, conflict resolution and peacebuilding in war-affected contexts.

You'll graduate with both an academic understanding of conflict and post-war development and a clearer appreciation of the difficulties confronted by practioners and policy makers.

The MA in Victorian Literature and Culture explores the engagement of nineteenth-century literature with a wide range of political, social and aesthetic issues. You will encounter writing in a variety of styles and genres, and come to be familiar with both contemporary and modern critical perspectives.

This flexible programme gives you the choice to specialise within the Victorian period or to explore a range of research interests across the nineteenth century, including interdisciplinary options from departments including History and History of Art.
