You’ll engage with the wider research culture of the Centre for Modern Studies, and there will be a diverse schedule of seminars, conferences and reading groups for you to attend. You’ll engage with the study of language on a conceptual level as well as the detailed level of linguistic data. The course has flexibility in terms of how much Spanish and linguistics content you study. Whether you are an electronic/computer-based composer or an early music specialist who wants to make the very best recordings, this course will provide you with the intellectual and practical skills to realise your goals.

Recordings and productions are the dominant way of engaging with music of all types. This program explores the skills and knowledge relevant to this important musical activity, as well as understanding how it affects music more broadly.

You'll study practical, theoretical and analytical aspects of the creation, perception and reception of audio productions. You'll take an interdisciplinary approach, examining how creative studio practice is informed by science and engineering (acoustics, psychoacoustics, electroacoustics, signal processing) as well as composition, performance and musicology.

The course combines a very broad view of the techniques and applications of production for audio media with the subsequent development of more tightly focussed individual skills and scholarship. You'll encounter a range of possible projects, from the creation of entirely synthetic material using computer-based techniques to the successful capture of acoustic performances, as well as the restoration and reconstruction of existing audio heritage.

Combine the study of Italian with investigations into the nature of language itself. You'll be taught in Italian from the start, so you'll become confident using Italian as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. Italian has close links to Romance languages and to Latin which will greatly enhance your understanding of various languages.

This course is designed for those with experience of teaching English as a second language.
The one-year programme is designed for students with at least one year’s teaching experience who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning of the English language. Like MA ALLT, it is expected that students will already have an understanding of the main approaches to language teaching and language analysis. The course will provide rich opportunities for reflection on practice, and for the development of the understanding underlying principles and theories of English language teaching and learning. There is also a broad range of option modules to choose from in Term 1. Teaching and learning activities include presentations by the tutor, small group discussions and practical activities (individual and pair work).  Summative assessments take the form of written assignments, exams, oral presentations and dissertations.
