Historical Archaeology explores the material remains of the last 2,000 years - the period for which texts and document sources exist.

Understanding and analysing these sources enables us to understand human lives, from the spread of the Roman Empire to everyday life for the Vikings.

This course provides an important overview of the European Mesolithic, exploring the ways in which the period has been interpreted from the 19th century up to the present day. You'll have the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge research on several Mesolithic excavation projects, including nearby Star Carr, site of the oldest house and oldest carpentry in Europe; Howick in Northumberland; and coastal shell middens in Europe.

The lack of research in this area means that there is a huge amount waiting to be discovered, and you could find yourself becoming a leading specialist in the field and getting involved with pioneering projects and research. You'll even have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of experimental archaeology in our Mesolithic camp. You'll also learn about cutting-edge techniques, such as ancient DNA and stable isotope analysis and climate-change reconstruction.

This challenging and rewarding course offers you the perfect blend of theory and practice, devised to meet demand for professional training in the UK and worldwide. It will give you a thorough knowledge of how, and why, archaeological fieldwork has arrived at its current state and acquaint you with the key methods employed in modern fieldwork, analysis and dissemination. You'll learn to think strategically about project design and tactically about project implementation.

You'll build a deeper understanding of the theoretical, legislative and ethical context of archaeological fieldwork whilst you study among a community of practitioners that is unrivalled in the UK.

There are also opportunities for placement experience with professional archaeological organisations, further developing the skills and knowledge essential for varied archaeological careers and research.

You'll study the history of art, which will be invaluable as you develop skills in curating galleries and art museums. You’ll go on a number of field trips to encounter objects in their various institutional settings.
You can also study a language in your first year, with options specially tailored for art historians.

As part of the degree, you'll study a range of art history and curatorial modules. Some of these will take place in a seminar room and others in museums and galleries.

Our course emphasises data analysis and will provide you with contemporary statistical ideas and methodologies that are attractive to prospective employers. The skills you gain are useful for a wide range of financial data analysis and in a range of other sectors where data analysis is required, for example sociology, health science, medical science or biology. This experience is also an ideal foundation for further academic study; many of our students choose to progress to PhD.

Our Statistics and Probability Group has a thriving research culture. Our group works with mainstream statistics to develop new methodology and apply it to real-world problems. The team produces world-class research, publishing in top journals. Our graduate students have full access to this expertise, as well as being exposed to forefront research carried out across the globe through our regular seminars and working groups.

Our MA in Medieval History will enable you to explore new approaches to the history of medieval Britain and Europe. You will have a chance to acquire new knowledge, as well as to develop valuable skills alongside extensive training in research technique and methodology.

Biochemistry sits at the boundary between the physical and life sciences. It concerns the molecular basis of health and disease, contributing to the discovery of new medicines, the growth of biotechnology, and the feeding of a growing population.

You will learn how knowledge of DNA sequences and appreciation of the structure and function of proteins are enabling us to better understand how living systems work, guiding the design of drugs to combat disease, and the engineering of biomolecules to enhance industrial processes.

You’ll work in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry and experience the excellent facilities for teaching and research. You'll develop knowledge, critical analysis and skills in environmental science, and learn about its application to the management of natural resources. You will be prepared for a wide range of careers in environmental consultancy and business, in government and non-governmental organisations and in environmental research.

You'll take part in problem solving especially in issues that are at the forefront of our research. You will also examine case-studies that allow you to analyse and tackle the complex problems that characterise environmental management.

The course is also suitable for highly motivated individuals who are seeking to convert to an environmental career through developing specialist skills in environmental science and management.

Computer Science is founded upon Maths, and the study of the two together allows you to explore topics core to both whilst gaining an insight into how they intersect.

Maths influences Computer Science, from designing and analysing efficient computer programs to developing formal proofs that a piece of software does what was intended. This is especially important, for example, if the software is being used to fly a plane.

Increasingly Computer Science is also being used to find solutions to mathematical issues. Computers are used to solve long-standing mathematical problems, as they can help visualise complex numerical data, search for solutions, and make number manipulation faster.
