Our BA History of Art with a year abroad will give you four distinctive and complementary years of studying the history of art and architecture.

You'll start with a year-long introduction to the history of art with an option to study a language. You'll build on these essential skills in your year abroad which you'll spend studying with one of our prestigious partner institutions in Europe, the USA and China, immersing yourself in the language, culture, art and architecture. You'll receive rounded training in the discipline and practice of art history.

During your time at York we'll introduce you to an extraordinary variety of art and architecture from many areas, including Europe and the Americas, but also covering the Middle East, North Africa, and East, South and South East Asia. You can also study an exciting range of time periods, from the late antique to the contemporary.

History of Art is a traditional humanities subject with a strong vocational element, allowing you to develop valuable transferable skills. We have partnerships with the Tate, the National Gallery, the V&A and York Museums trust. We also work on art beyond the museum and gallery system, including with partners in country houses, maritime museums and churches. These partnerships contribute to the teaching and research in our department - you'll benefit from our collaborative links with these institutions. In addition the interdisciplinary nature of art history allows you to develop your existing skills and interests and is reflected in our close relationship with other departments and centres in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Studying music at university gives you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of that experience and to look at how music has shaped and responded to the world. The story of music is always about people and their creativity – even in a world full of music, what it is and what it does still matters.

You'll learn from musicians who are leaders in their fields and benefit from the working relationships we have built up with our professional partners – an enviable roster of artists-in-association. We teach in small groups and individual tutorials, which means you'll always be actively engaged in discussion with your lecturers.

The world needs better politics: better ways of distributing resources and resolving conflicts.

How can we do this when our engagement with politics is most often local and national? The politics of the future is haunted by those of the past. In order to imagine and move towards building a new future, an understanding of history must underpin national and international politics.

This interdisciplinary MA seeks to address these problems by bringing together politics and contemporary history, with a particular focus on transnational ideas and institutions.

Material culture tells the story of people and their things: allowing us insights into the significance that objects held for people in the past.

Interweaving practical and theoretical approaches to material culture, this course explores ethnoarchaeological and experimental archaeological approaches to objects, alongside functional analyses of a broad range of artefact types.

You will discover the theories underpinning our understanding of the material world while developing invaluable practical skills such as designing and executing your own experimental archaeology project, the analysis of microscopic wear and residue traces, working with objects from excavations and museum collections or making a short documentary film for the heritage sector.

Whatever your period of interest is, this course will equip you with the skills and experience you need to begin a career in cultural heritage, academia, or commercial archaeology.

Understand the forces at work where power and money intersect with ideals. Grapple with the problems that shape society, explore the theory behind policy and question the morality of competing systems of government. By what right do our rulers govern? What conditions create poverty and how does wealth interact with political unrest?

Our flexible course lets you tailor your degree to your strengths. You'll learn with a diverse and international student body. Our active Club of Politics, Economics and Philosophy (PEP) encourages debate beyond the classroom, and with opportunities to study abroad you can develop a truly global perspective.

Combine the study of French and German with investigations into the nature of language itself. Spend a year abroad studying, working or teaching in German- and French-speaking countries, consolidating your language skills.

You'll be taught in French and German, so you'll become confident using your languages as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of French- and German-speaking culture and societies which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator in both languages.

Your communication skills will be complemented by investigations into the science and structure of language through a range of linguistics modules. The course has flexibility in terms of how much French, German and linguistics content you study over the four years. By the end of your studies, you will be equipped for a range of professional roles that call for expertise in language, linguistics and culture.

In an increasingly cutthroat global economy, we aim to create reflective, socially and ethically aware specialists in operations management.

You’ll learn to identify problems, gather relevant information and analyse your data to make decisions and take action.

More mathematically rigorous than the equivalent BA, the BSc in Business and Management is a well-balanced degree that will prepare you to make complex decisions in a volatile global marketplace. Your year in industry will give you the chance to put your skills into practice at the cutting edge of management theory, then draw on your first-hand experience to inform your final year of study.

Our course emphasises a high level of craft and creativity, combined with critical thought and collaboration. You'll gain scientific and technical training with hands-on experience of visual effects systems, programme creation and artistic decision-making.

We'll teach you through a mix of workshops, lectures, screenings and masterclasses with leading academics and industry professionals. You'll realise your own creative and technical projects and develop essential professional skills to pursue a career in industry.

On this MA you can focus on production-orientated work. Alternatively you can focus on formal research into the technologies behind postproduction systems and apply for the MSc Film and Television Production with Visual Effects.

Many of our graduates work in the industry, from film to television companies, and some of our graduates have gone on to research in industry or academia.
