Economic development, population growth, poverty, and globalisation all place increasing demands on our environment and its resources.

Our unique Environment, Economics and Ecology degree focuses on ecosystem services - the processes by which the environment produces the resources we need such as clean air, water, food and materials.

Our health and wellbeing depends upon these services and our use and management of these natural resources. We study the links between human and natural systems, and the need for a holistic socio-ecological approach to understand challenges and solutions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Education affects us all, but few people ever question the systems and structures which seem so familiar.

Delve into a wide range of disciplines and fields, including psychology, sociology, social policy, politics, literature and history. You'll study how people learn; how education interacts with wider society; how politics affects what we learn and how we learn it. You'll explore how education is organised in different countries; and how modern education has been shaped by its historical roots.

Alongside rigorous academic study, you'll gain valuable skills and experience with a range of opportunities for placements and volunteering. Your studies will inform and guide you, giving you practice applying educational theory to real-world situations.

This course will not qualify you as a teacher. However, it is good preparation for a range of postgraduate initial teacher training courses.

You will build a solid foundation in theoretical concepts, which you will supplement with valuable experience in the field, and we have a dedicated field course in each of the first three years of the programme. As an ecologist, your focus on understanding our ecosystems and the processes occurring in them will be vital in helping us to work towards sustainable and effective solutions around current and future global challenges, whether around climate change, feeding the world sustainably or tackling diseases.
