Learn to bridge the gap between theory and practice by combining hands-on experience with interdisciplinary academic enquiry. Discover the theoretical frameworks and practical skills which make advances in human rights possible.

Study different aspects of human rights practice: the strategies employed and the debates, institutions and political structures that human rights defenders seek to influence. You'll learn directly from human rights defenders with first-hand experience in governmental, judicial, and grassroots roles.

You'll also develop a range of fieldwork, advocacy and legal skills and apply these on a placement in the UK or South Africa.

Heritage is the legacies of past human activity. From buildings to cultural traditions, studying heritage allows us to understand how we have defined ourselves throughout history.

BA Archaeology and Heritage brings together a depth of knowledge about the human past with a practical understanding of why that knowledge is important for society today. You'll explore different interpretations of heritage and gain practical skills in communicating our past to the public. This course will enable you to understand contemporary international events, their causes and repercussions in great depth, through theoretical debates – and how those debates resonate in distinct issue areas and contexts.

You'll be taught in Italian from the start, so you'll become confident using Italian as a means of communication, and for critical thinking. You'll gain an understanding of Italian culture and society which will underpin your abilities as a high-level communicator.

You’ll engage with the study of language on a conceptual level as well as the detailed level of raw linguistic data. On this course we combine writing workshops with seminar discussions. The practice of writing is interwoven with critical analysis and preparation for a professional career. Established in 1972, this course combines essential disciplinary knowledge and advanced scholarship with hands-on experience in sustainable building conservation practice. Working alongside experienced practitioners, you will engage with practical and professional issues in a series of focused skills modules from an exciting range of related disciplines and develop your own hands-on experience in practice.

A voluntary work placement in a conservation organisation in the York region will enhance and focus your practice-based experience and you will develop your research skills in an original, independently conducted research project.
