The Civil Engineering Programs at Arkansas State University are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.  Civil engineering is the application of math, science, and engineering fundamentals for the benefit of society and the supporting infrastructure systems.

Civil engineers are involved in the following areas:

• Environmental Engineering (pollution control including the design of water and waste water facilities)
• Water Resources (study of the flow of water over land, under ground and storage)
• Transportation Engineering (design of highways and studies of traffic flow)
• Structural Engineering (design of building, bridges and other related structures)
• Geotechnical Engineering (study of soil behaviors, land slides and other topics)

Civil Engineering at A-State
The civil engineering program of ASU offers courses in all areas of civil engineering with a strong general education component. The faculty is involved in research, solving engineering problems in the community, consulting work. These experiences are brought into the classroom so students receive a well-rounded educational experience. This includes learning the engineering theory as well as the practical application of the theory to real world problems.

Program Educational Objectives

The program educational objectives for the civil engineering program, which pertain to program graduates 3 to 5 years after completing the program, are:

• Graduates have successfully advanced in civil engineering practice as evidenced by their achievements and contributions to their employers and the greater engineering community.
• Graduates have pursued graduate degrees, obtained professional licensure, and/or completed professional development activities in continuing to advance their knowledge base in civil engineering or related professional fields.
• Graduates are actively working to improve their community and society in general by utilizing and sharing their engineering expertise.

Student Outcomes
The Student Outcomes for each of the undergraduate engineering programs are:

• An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
• An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
• An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
• An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;

The field of clinical laboratory science offers opportunities for students who are interested in the biological and chemical sciences. Clinical laboratory scientists are academically prepared, skilled laboratory workers who perform a variety of analyses which aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The BS-Clinical Laboratory Scientist degree is a 4-year program which provides an understanding of the theoretical and scientific fundamentals underlying the procedures involved, which include a broad based knowledge in the principles of human biology, chemistry, analytical instrumentation, and a familiarity with the educational and managerial aspects associated with one who occupies a professional role in a wide variety of settings.

Prerequisites
Required Courses
In order to be considered for admission into the CLS program, candidates must have completed or be currently enrolled in:

• Basic Principles of CLS
• General Chemistry I & II
• Anatomy & Physiology I & II
• Microbiology

This applied computer course provides students with critical electronic communications, data and file management skills, along with a strong focus on using common productivity applications to format, calculate, analyze, visualize, and present or report data and information.

Courses offered in philosophy are designed to provide students with the knowledge and logical skills to understand and critically evaluate the intellectual, moral, and religious choices they encounter.

The program for students majoring in philosophy seeks to provide the background necessary for those preparing for law school, seminary, and graduate school as well as for those who simply seek a liberal education as the foundation of a career in business or industry.

Classes will introduce you to some of the perennial questions we encounter: Free Will and Determinism;  What makes an action right or wrong;  Reason and Religion.

What Skills Will You Develop?
Philosophy will develop critical thinking and reasoning skills.  What is some of the evidence for this? Philosophy majors score higher on the Law School Admissions Test than any other area of the Liberal Arts.  Philosophy majors score higher than any other major on the verbal section of the Graduate Record Exam.

The Arkansas State University MBA Program is a professional degree program designed to prepare students of all educational and professional backgrounds for management positions in all types of organizations. As such, the program stresses the development of analytical, problem-solving and decision making competencies for the dynamic, complex global organizational and social environments.

Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Students completing this degree program will have the skills and competencies necessary to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate effective health-related programs. Graduates often find employment in public health agencies, clinical facilities (hospitals and medical clinics), worksite wellness departments, or voluntary agencies.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders is a preprofessional degree program which provides students with academic and practical preparation considered essential for success in the Communication Disorders graduate program.

The undergraduate curriculum offers students a broad base of preparation in general education requirements, the sciences associated with communication and its disorders, anatomy and physiology, and a number of basic methods courses associated with the identification and treatment of a variety of communication disorders.

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program, a one-year master’s degree plan consisting of 30 semester credit hours, is designed for all engineers on management career paths as well as for those charged with managing technology in engineering, manufacturing, and other high-tech organizations. The MEM degree program will also benefit engineers pursuing licensure in states where candidates for professional licensure are required to have an additional 30 semester credit hours of coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in engineering. The curriculum consists of courses offered by the A-State College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Healthcare Management - Concentration
The MBA with a Concentration in Healthcare Management is designed to allow students to complement their studies in business administration with in-depth coverage of the core components of the healthcare administration arena and the unique issues and challenges facing healthcare organizations in the dynamic healthcare industry. Students will complete the 24 hours of the MBA core and 15 hours of graduate level courses in Healthcare Administration.
