Film and Electronic Arts is an innovative program that emphasizes both theory and practice. Focusing on the integration of moving images, culture, and technology, the curriculum is designed to develop storytelling and production skills while providing a foundational education in the arts and humanities. Media history, theory, and aesthetics are taught as an integral part of production practices.

Students may apply to the Option in Narrative Production after completing the Major-Specific Admissions Requirements. Note: The 54 units required for the major includes the following 3-unit preparation course not included under the major requirements below: ART 110 - Introduction to the Visual Arts; or AH 111B Foundation Art History: c.1300-present, Europe and the United States; or articulated equivalent (grade of C or better required).

The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Education (30-33 units) is designed to foster the development of educators who are caring, effective, reflective, and committed to improving their schools. Coursework prepares teachers to apply theoretical insights and research findings to the practical problems they encounter in their work in curriculum and instruction.

The Master of Arts in Dance is a 31-unit practice-oriented degree created to serve dance educators working primarily in secondary and community college settings. It is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. The MA functions as a form of continuing education and professional development for credentialed teachers.

Because M.A. candidates are employed during the academic year, this low-residency program is designed to be completed during summer sessions and via distance learning experiences.

The M.A. in Dance is run as a Special Sessions Program through the University's College of Continuing and Professional Education. The M.A. program of study consists of three intensive summer sessions of 9-12 units of coursework and the successful completion of comprehensive exams taken during and immediately following the third summer. The M.A. in Dance offers both studio and theory courses; it is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. All courses are designed to introduce new concepts and trigger deeper thought and analysis in the field of dance. All courses in the M.A. degree are at the graduate level and are offered only to graduate students.

Exercise science centers on the effects of training and physical activity on the human body. Students will study the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and how training can improve human function including health, disease, and performance. This option prepares students for careers in human movement and allied health fields as well as those interested in graduate work in these areas or those pursuing training in medicine and other healthcare professions.

Our students go on to other advanced degrees, become religious professionals, secondary and higher education teachers, librarians, educational entrepreneurs, managers or aid-workers in NGOs, writers or performance artists, business managers, and the like. Reflecting our college’s philosophy, the French and Francophone Studies Program is designed to develop cross-cultural awareness and to foster international understanding in a global world, an imperative need for our student body which is increasingly multi-lingual and multi-national, and comes from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Our program adds an exciting new dimension to the traditional curriculum by incorporating interdisciplinary and multi-media courses on the French and Francophone worlds. Our faculty is committed to excellence in teaching, as well as accommodating students’ needs, areas of interest and expanding their knowledge in the field. A degree in French places the world of international communication and culture at your fingertips. As one of the foremost languages of global diplomacy, international relations and business, and scholarship, a degree in French leads to careers in a number of exciting fields. It is also the preferred language for academic pursuit in the social sciences and critical studies. The Francophone world only begins in France, stretching far beyond the Champs-Elysées into Africa, Quebec, the Caribbean, and Tahiti. Additionally, a double major or a minor in French enhances any other degree program, making the student doubly marketable upon graduation. They pursue professions in teaching, business, travel, and diplomacy, to name only a few, continue their studies within our own M.A. program or pursue doctoral programs at Ph.D. granting institutions.

The Liberal Studies major provides a rich, rigorous crossdisciplinary liberal arts program of study. There are two programs in the major: 1) The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is for students intending to become teachers who wish to combine subject matter preparation for elementary teaching with coursework leading to a Multiple Subject teaching credential; 2) The Liberal Studies major (120 units) is for students who seek subject matter preparation for elementary teaching as preparation for a post-baccalaureate credential program to be completed separately from the bachelor’s degree.

The Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre Arts is the terminal degree offering the professional training deemed necessary by the major Theatre Arts Schools in the United States.

All students admitted to the MFA program are members of California Repertory Company and are subject to the operating procedures of the company. CalRep, the professional arm of the Theatre Arts Department, prepares and performs plays from the canon of international dramatic literature

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.
