Educational administrators serve in many capacities. No matter what position an administrator holds within a TK-12 educational organization, all efforts should be directed at supporting equitable academic opportunity and achievement for all students. The courses in the M.A. in Educational Administration with preliminary administrative services credential program are designed to prepare leaders for this important work. Emphasis is placed on (1) examining the role of a school leader, with heavy emphasis on instructional leadership, (2) using data to solve problems of practice, (3) leading school improvement to create more equitable schools, (4) managing and guiding change, and (5) working collaboratively with diverse families and communities. The program’s primary mission is to educate students who will assume leadership positions in diverse, urban, TK-12 schools and districts.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. All students enter CSULB Dance in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dance program, providing students with a balanced course of study that prepares them for careers in dance as performers, educators, arts administrators, health and fitness specialists, and/or graduate study in dance while providing opportunities for study in specific areas of personal interest.

CSULB is one of only a handful of schools that offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology. This degree program, operated under the auspices of the Department of Biological Sciences, is designed both for students considering graduate work in marine biology, and also for those seeking employment in private industry or governmental agencies.

Students working towards the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology enroll in small upper division lecture and lab classes taught by Ph.D.-level faculty. They take frequent field trips to nearby bay, estuary, rocky intertidal, and open ocean habitats. There are many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to carry out original scientific research. A Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from CSULB has helped many of our past students to successfully compete for marine biology-related jobs in resource management agencies and companies. Many of our alumni also go on to do graduate work in the marine sciences.

The Master of Science in Nutritional Science program offers interdisciplinary study in the field of nutrition that allows students to develop particular competencies related to their career aspirations.

The mission of the Master of Science in Nutritional Science Program is to provide a specialized course of advanced nutrition study that integrates graduate education and research to develop competent professionals prepared to meet the nutrition-related needs of the state of California, the nation, and the world.

The program offers four emphases: Nutritional Science, Latino Health and Nutrition, Food Science, and Dietetic Internship, and has a variety of elective courses to meet student needs (with courses in nutrition for exercise and performance, endocrinology, molecular genetics, nutrition and aging, using media to promote nutrition, etc.).

The research experience is a key part of learning and development for students in the program. MS in Nutritional Science students develop skills in planning, carrying out, and evaluating research activities and learn to critically use research findings to inform practice decision. Our nutrition faculty have active research agendas and provide many opportunities for student collaborations on research projects.

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines American life and culture.The work of American Studies takes place both on campuses and in communities. American Studies scholars investigate where the ideals of American democracy are at their finest and where they remain incomplete.  

American Studies at CSULB was first established in the 1970s. Recently, a group of faculty committed to current ideas and scholarship in American Studies revitalized the program on campus. American Studies offers students of today a new approach to learning. Because of its flexibility, students will actively assist in the growth and design of the American Studies program at CSULB by establishing links among departments and areas of study and by designing their own plan of inquiry. Students will explore various aspects of society and culture at different moments in American history and situate the interactions between peoples in a culturally diverse society within national and global contexts.

American Studies students receive a broad liberal arts education focusing on American culture, traditions, artistic and material production, ideas, identities, and spaces. The major in American Studies offers a solid background for careers in law, journalism, public service, business, and education. The program also provides the foundation for graduate work in American Studies and related fields. In other words, the knowledge and skills our majors acquire prepares them to succeed in just about any field. 

The Master of Science in Applied Statistics program trains students to utilize statistical methods to draw valid and meaningful inferences from data. Using a variety of statistical software (SAS, SPSS, Minitab, R), graduates are expected to analyze real-world data appropriately and communicate their findings effectively. The degree is granted to students who complete 30 units of course work and either pass two comprehensive examinations or fulfill the thesis/project requirement. Typically, the degree is obtained in four semesters.

History is a discipline at the core of the liberal arts tradition. It seeks to preserve, extend, and reevaluate our study of the past, and to connect it with the present. Students who specialize in History are typically those who plan to teach, practice law, or enter government service; but History students also go into business, librarianship, foundation work, management of local history projects, and fundraising. Some history alumni have become successful writers.

The Master of Science Degree in School Counseling is a 51-57 unit program. Graduates of the program are typically employed in K-12 education to support the academic, social/emotional, and career readiness needs of all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Program candidates concurrently meet requirements for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential required for persons employed as school counselors in public schools. The program is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).

Master of Science Accountancy is for students and professionals who want to advance and develop their accounting knowledge in auditing, financial statement analysis, corporate governance, forensic accounting, and taxation required to meet the requirements for CPA licensure.
