Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies, Interdisciplinary Option, provides students with a thorough basis in the study of French language, history, literature, politics, and culture within a global context. This major provides a unique opportunity for students to address the cultural, economic, social, and political dimensions of Francophonie. The Interdisciplinary Option reinforces California State University, Long Beach’s established and recognized record as a leader in offering students a global pedagogical experience that can be transferred to the working world of the present and the future. Students completing the B.A. in French and Francophone Studies (Interdisciplinary Option) will acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of history, culture, and society of France that will prepare them for a broad range of career options both at home and abroad. These include international law and business, teaching, government and Foreign Service. In addition, the solid background in French and Francophone history and literature provides a strong foundation for further study at the graduate level in a variety of M.A. and Ph.D. programs. To meet new demands for professionals, the Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies (Interdisciplinary Option) combines courses from French literature and related fields in the arts and humanities. The Interdisciplinary Option will enable students to draw from a multifaceted disciplinary basis to interpret cultural phenomena and trends in a variety of global contexts. As the only California State University to approach French and Francophone Studies at the undergraduate level from both global and cross-disciplinary perspectives, California State University, Long Beach recognizes the cooperative and symbiotic relationship connecting the disciplines of history and literature with respect to a comprehensive understanding of the Francophone World. French and Francophone Studies Interdisciplinary Option majors are required to develop a program of study in consultation with the program advisor.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

Film and Electronic Arts is an innovative program that emphasizes both theory and practice. Focusing on the integration of moving images, culture, and technology, the curriculum is designed to develop storytelling and production skills while providing a foundational education in the arts and humanities. Media history, theory, and aesthetics are taught as an integral part of production practices.
Students may apply to the Option in Narrative Production after completing the Major-Specific Admissions Requirements. Note: The 54 units required for the major includes the following 3-unit preparation course not included under the major requirements below: ART 110 - Introduction to the Visual Arts; or AH 111B Foundation Art History: c.1300-present, Europe and the United States; or articulated equivalent (grade of C or better required).

Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations
The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Public relations graduates become public relations professionals in corporations, nonprofit organizations, and communication firms and specialize in employee relations, media relations, community relations, multicultural relations, consumer relations, marketing communications, public affairs, and special event management. In their classes, public relations students learn how to use both traditional and digital forms of media, including social media, to communicate with target audiences. Advanced students become skilled in strategic planning and campaign development. The department offers two academic programs in public relations: A Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations (48 units) and a Minor in Public Relations (18 units).

Master of Fine Arts in Art Studio Art
Our MFA degree in Studio Art is designed to foster both interdisciplinary and discipline-specific dialogue by engaging students in a set of core department-wide requirements, interdisciplinary opportunities, and discipline- specific courses and curricular “tracks.”
Within the MFA degree in Studio Art students develop a personalized program of study within established curricular parameters, and with the consultation and approval of the student’s faculty committee. Students develop a more personalized program of study within curricular tracks reflecting the School of Art’s varied programs in Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Fiber, Graphic Design, Illustration/Animation, Metal, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture/4D, and Wood.

Master of Arts in Asian Studies
The Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies provides a comparative understanding of the cultural, economic, and socio-political significance of Asia in the 21st century. It requires competency in one or more Asian languages. To achieve this, MA students are encouraged to study abroad for part of their course work. Graduates from the MA program in Asian Studies can expect to be much more competitive for positions in the Foreign Service, State Department, K-12 and community college education and administration, international finance and industry, non-governmental organizations, academic publishing, professional translation work, and Ph.D. programs in Chinese, Japanese, or Asian Studies.

Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies
Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. Graduate study in Recreation Administration prepares students for advanced careers in the field of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. Our program adds an exciting new dimension to the traditional curriculum by incorporating interdisciplinary and multi-media courses on the French and Francophone worlds. The Francophone world only begins in France, stretching far beyond the Champs-Elysées into Africa, Quebec, the Caribbean, and Tahiti. They pursue professions in teaching, business, travel, and diplomacy, to name only a few, continue their studies within our own M.A. program or pursue doctoral programs at Ph.D. granting institutions.

The department offers a master’s degree in anthropology and an option in applied anthropology.
This is a 33-unit M.A. option comprised of a 9-unit core, a 12-unit applied core, a 6-unit thesis/project, and 6 elective units.
Within the global context of urban and regional cultural change, the program offers three concentrations: multicultural education, medical/health care, and community/organizations. Regional emphasis begins with the languages, cultures, and organizations of southern California and the Southwest and extends globally.

Master of Science in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology and Nutrition Option (STEM)
Nutrition is a potent modulator of the acute responses and chronic adaptations to exercise and training. The Master’s Program in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition allows students to study the interaction between nutrition and the physiology of exercise. Graduates will understand how to meet the nutritional needs of exercise, training, and conditioning to enhance human health, function, and performance as well as the underlying mechanisms at the molecular level to the whole body. The Physiology of Exercise and Sport (PEXS) Laboratory is operated by active researchers in the field and is equipped for gene and biochemical analysis as well as whole-body metabolics and athletic performance. From athletic performance to community nutrition, this degree prepares students to work with a wide variety of populations in a number of different settings using research-based curriculum, practical experiences, and original research. The Master’s Program in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition also equips students for advanced graduate work including doctoral degrees and clinical and medical training.
