Overview
The Department of Journalism & Public Relations offers undergraduate programs that prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations and other media, editorial and storytelling related industries. Students take courses that provide both a strong theoretical foundation and real-life, hands-on training in the skills they need to pursue careers in mass communications. Journalism graduates become reporters, editors, bloggers, broadcasters, designers and managers at media organizations and are trained in multimedia storytelling and communicating across multiple platforms, including newspapers, magazines, online media, social media, radio, and television.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Master of Arts in Communication Studies
The Communication Studies Department offers a Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Our program provides students with advanced instruction in the major theories and research methods in the academic discipline of communication. Our graduates typically go on to doctoral programs or become communication instructors at the community college level. We provide students with a broad foundation in the discipline of communication. As such, we do not offer areas of specialty, but students can take a variety of elective courses.

Master of Arts in Educational Administration
Educational administrators serve in many capacities. No matter what position an administrator holds within a TK-12 educational organization, all efforts should be directed at supporting equitable academic opportunity and achievement for all students. The courses in the M.A. in Educational Administration with preliminary administrative services credential program are designed to prepare leaders for this important work. Emphasis is placed on (1) examining the role of a school leader, with heavy emphasis on instructional leadership, (2) using data to solve problems of practice, (3) leading school improvement to create more equitable schools, (4) managing and guiding change, and (5) working collaboratively with diverse families and communities. The program’s primary mission is to educate students who will assume leadership positions in diverse, urban, TK-12 schools and districts.

Master of Arts in Education - Early Childhood Education Option
The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Early Childhood Education (30-33 units) is designed to foster the development of educators who are able to apply research-based knowledge in designing developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum and assessment strategies for children ages birth through 8. Candidates develop parent involvement strategies, reflect on issues facing the field, evaluate the quality of early childhood programs in their local communities, critically evaluate policies that impact young children and their families around the world, and utilize technology to enhance communication and learning.

Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
The Liberal Studies major provides a rich, rigorous crossdisciplinary liberal arts program of study. There are two programs in the major: 1) The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is for students intending to become teachers who wish to combine subject matter preparation for elementary teaching with coursework leading to a Multiple Subject teaching credential; 2) The Liberal Studies major (120 units) is for students who seek subject matter preparation for elementary teaching as preparation for a post-baccalaureate credential program to be completed separately from the bachelor’s degree.

Master of Arts in Dance
The Master of Arts in Dance is a 31-unit practice-oriented degree created to serve dance educators working primarily in secondary and community college settings. It is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. The MA functions as a form of continuing education and professional development for credentialed teachers.
Because M.A. candidates are employed during the academic year, this low-residency program is designed to be completed during summer sessions and via distance learning experiences.
The M.A. in Dance is run as a Special Sessions Program through the University's College of Continuing and Professional Education. The M.A. program of study consists of three intensive summer sessions of 9-12 units of coursework and the successful completion of comprehensive exams taken during and immediately following the third summer. The M.A. in Dance offers both studio and theory courses; it is designed to broaden and deepen dance knowledge and skills, including hands-on experience in dance concert production. All courses are designed to introduce new concepts and trigger deeper thought and analysis in the field of dance. All courses in the M.A. degree are at the graduate level and are offered only to graduate students.

Master of Arts in Asian Studies
The Master of Arts (MA) in Asian Studies provides a comparative understanding of the cultural, economic, and socio-political significance of Asia in the 21st century. It requires competency in one or more Asian languages. To achieve this, MA students are encouraged to study abroad for part of their course work. Graduates from the MA program in Asian Studies can expect to be much more competitive for positions in the Foreign Service, State Department, K-12 and community college education and administration, international finance and industry, non-governmental organizations, academic publishing, professional translation work, and Ph.D. programs in Chinese, Japanese, or Asian Studies.
