California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is located in the center of one of the most diverse regions in the United States. This offers anthropology graduate students many opportunities to gain invaluable experience conducting research locally or globally and finding interesting, worthwhile internships or employment. The CSULB Department of Anthropology offers two Master of Arts degrees: General Anthropology and Option in Applied Anthropology. Both programs prepare graduates for employment or further study in anthropology or a related field.

We are not currently accepting graduate applications in the fields of archaeology and biological / physical anthropology.  Students intending to pursue an MA degree in these fields will not be accepted into the graduate program.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists simultaneously seek to understand the commonality as well as the diversity of human experience.

A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology provides solid preparation for students who wish to pursue a career in any field that involves people, including education, business, health care, sports, or community development. It is ideal for individuals who seek an understanding of behavioral principles while pursuing a well- rounded education. This degree is also designed to provide a strong foundation for graduate school, including the three Master’s degree programs offered in the department.

The department offers a master’s degree in anthropology and an option in applied anthropology.

This is a 33-unit M.A. option comprised of a 9-unit core, a 12-unit applied core, a 6-unit thesis/project, and 6 elective units.

Within the global context of urban and regional cultural change, the program offers three concentrations: multicultural education, medical/health care, and community/organizations. Regional emphasis begins with the languages, cultures, and organizations of southern California and the Southwest and extends globally.

The Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) Professional Program at California State University, Long Beach is designed to prepare leaders for a changing world by providing the skills that employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. Greater Los Angeles is one of the most globally-connected metropolitan areas in the world. The region’s diversity of trade, international investments, cultures, and languages exceed that of all but a small handful of countries. Employment opportunities in California reflect a demand for related competencies globally.

CSULB is ranked #1 in the Western U.S. for Best Value (Washington Monthly) as well as the top 10% of universities nationally for Return on Investment (Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce). The MAIA program, aligned with global standards in the field, combines interdisciplinary, policy-oriented, intercultural and global studies with career development. Through a cohort design, students attain both the international and project management skills employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. This 18-month program includes 12 months in residence, followed by a carefully placed internship with courses taken in residence or online. Graduates become prepared for careers in areas such as International Development & Relief, Migration Advocacy, International Non-Profit Management, International Business, and Trade Policy.

The MAIA program identifies and develops the professional skills necessary for a successful international career in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors—both at home and abroad. The core elements of the program include methodological skills, functional competence, and foreign language knowledge with a multidisciplinary approach. The curriculum applies prevalent theory to real-world situations, while developing tools for project development and problem resolution.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

Comparative World Literature studies:

• World literatures in translation and the relationships among those literatures
• The relationship between literature and other fields such as art, music, history, philosophy and theatre.

The Bachelor of Arts in Comparative World Literature has three emphasis options:

• World Literature in Translation
• Cultural Studies
• Language and Literature.

Typical tasks and responsibilities undertaken by students in the curriculum for this program would not fall within one of the traditional specialties in engineering, e.g. aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, or computer science and engineering. The student may pursue an interdisciplinary program, approved by a graduate advisor, by selecting courses from the various departments of engineering. The Africana Studies major is designed to provide students with a rich intellectual experience through the critical and systematic study of the life, thought and practice of African peoples, Continental and Diasporan, in their current and historical dimensions. Africana Studies seeks to critically examine and understand the Africana initiative and experience from an Afrocentric or African-centered perspective, i.e., from a position internal to the culture of the people studied, while retaining a respect for and openness to the multicultural character and instructive value of the total human experience.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of professional careers in the computer field. The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. Extensive laboratory time is required for these courses, and design and analysis experiences are emphasized.
