This degree is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the biomedical engineering field. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest.

The Rhetoric and Composition option is designed for students who desire to write for multiple readers and to analyze and interpret texts. This option prepares students for teaching on virtually all levels, for graduate study in English, and for professions that require intensive writing and communication skills.

The opportunity to explore a particular area of interest is provided by additional elective courses in the senior year. Several industry and professional society sponsored scholarships and internships are available to upper division mechanical engineering students. The undergraduate program in mechanical engineering offered at the Long Beach campus accepts both freshmen and transfer students. Students are admitted to the program following the university admission guidelines for freshmen and major specific admission criteria for transfer students.

Film and Electronic Arts is an innovative program that emphasizes both theory and practice. Focusing on the integration of moving images, culture, and technology, the curriculum is designed to develop storytelling and production skills while providing a foundational education in the arts and humanities. Media history, theory, and aesthetics are taught as an integral part of production practices.

Educational administrators serve in many capacities. No matter what position an administrator holds within a TK-12 educational organization, all efforts should be directed at supporting equitable academic opportunity and achievement for all students. The courses in the M.A. in Educational Administration with preliminary administrative services credential program are designed to prepare leaders for this important work. Emphasis is placed on (1) examining the role of a school leader, with heavy emphasis on instructional leadership, (2) using data to solve problems of practice, (3) leading school improvement to create more equitable schools, (4) managing and guiding change, and (5) working collaboratively with diverse families and communities. The program’s primary mission is to educate students who will assume leadership positions in diverse, urban, TK-12 schools and districts.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

The School Health Option is designed for persons who wish to become health science teachers in California middle and high schools. The program is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and meets subject matter competence requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Health Science. Prospective students should consult the department’s Health Science Single Subject Advisor early to plan their program.

Exercise science centers on the effects of training and physical activity on the human body. Students will study the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and how training can improve human function including health, disease, and performance. This option prepares students for careers in human movement and allied health fields as well as those interested in graduate work in these areas or those pursuing training in medicine and other healthcare professions.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. Graphic Design incorporates a broad approach to the transmission of ideas, information, and subjective impressions through the use of print, film, video, and computer media. The program prepares students for professional careers in design studios, advertising agencies, corporate design departments, motion graphics firms, web design companies, and free-lance consulting.
