American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines American life and culture.The work of American Studies takes place both on campuses and in communities. American Studies scholars investigate where the ideals of American democracy are at their finest and where they remain incomplete.  

American Studies at CSULB was first established in the 1970s. Recently, a group of faculty committed to current ideas and scholarship in American Studies revitalized the program on campus. American Studies offers students of today a new approach to learning. Because of its flexibility, students will actively assist in the growth and design of the American Studies program at CSULB by establishing links among departments and areas of study and by designing their own plan of inquiry. Students will explore various aspects of society and culture at different moments in American history and situate the interactions between peoples in a culturally diverse society within national and global contexts.

American Studies students receive a broad liberal arts education focusing on American culture, traditions, artistic and material production, ideas, identities, and spaces. The major in American Studies offers a solid background for careers in law, journalism, public service, business, and education. The program also provides the foundation for graduate work in American Studies and related fields. In other words, the knowledge and skills our majors acquire prepares them to succeed in just about any field. 

In addition to providing advanced analytical and communication skills broadly applicable to numerous careers, the art history graduate program prepares students with the necessary research skills and experiences to enter the professional fields of teaching, museum work, art gallery management, art consultancy, arts management, and art writing, or to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

The Major in Philosophy provides an intellectually rigorous program of study in a supportive environment. Reflecting our college’s philosophy, the French and Francophone Studies Program is designed to develop cross-cultural awareness and to foster international understanding in a global world, an imperative need for our student body which is increasingly multi-lingual and multi-national, and comes from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Our program adds an exciting new dimension to the traditional curriculum by incorporating interdisciplinary and multi-media courses on the French and Francophone worlds. Our faculty is committed to excellence in teaching, as well as accommodating students’ needs, areas of interest and expanding their knowledge in the field. A degree in French places the world of international communication and culture at your fingertips. As one of the foremost languages of global diplomacy, international relations and business, and scholarship, a degree in French leads to careers in a number of exciting fields. It is also the preferred language for academic pursuit in the social sciences and critical studies. The Francophone world only begins in France, stretching far beyond the Champs-Elysées into Africa, Quebec, the Caribbean, and Tahiti. Additionally, a double major or a minor in French enhances any other degree program, making the student doubly marketable upon graduation. They pursue professions in teaching, business, travel, and diplomacy, to name only a few, continue their studies within our own M.A. program or pursue doctoral programs at Ph.D. granting institutions.

The MS in Psychology, Option in Human Factors, is designed to prepare students to apply research-focused human factors skills to the design of jobs, information systems, consumer products, workplaces, and equipment in order to improve user performance, safety, and comfort.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.

A Master’s degree in political science provides a strong foundation for careers in government, political consulting, the law, academics, business, international organizations, education, and public service. A political science M.A. can be the basis for further study leading to a law degree, Ph.D., or other advanced degree.

The Political Science M.A Program at CSULB is a program for ambitious students interested in national and international politics. Our program allows students to acquire conceptual depth, learn methodological tools, and further develop their critical thinking abilities. The program is taught by instructors who do research on a variety of topics with contemporary political relevance.

The Master of Arts in Spanish from California State University, Long Beach opens doors for teachers, journalists, translators, writers, and other professionals seeking to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. The program has approximately 45 active students at any given time, a number that allows for individualized mentoring, advising, and intellectual engagement. Our graduates have become K-12 teachers, journalists, translators, interpreters, technical writers, community college instructors, lawyers, and PhD students. We offer an active program of intellectual and cultural events as well as opportunities for community and campus engagement. The Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing is the recognized terminal degree which offers the minimum professional training deemed necessary by the major schools in the United States for university and college teaching and for positions in the publishing industry. It is also the degree most frequently held by professional writers.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.
