The Materials Science option is designed primarily for those interested in careers that involve the physics of materials and the study of materials in relation to their applications. It is particularly appropriate for those seeking employment in private industry or government service as well as those students contemplating graduate work in these fields.

American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines American life and culture.The work of American Studies takes place both on campuses and in communities. American Studies scholars investigate where the ideals of American democracy are at their finest and where they remain incomplete.  

American Studies at CSULB was first established in the 1970s. Recently, a group of faculty committed to current ideas and scholarship in American Studies revitalized the program on campus. American Studies offers students of today a new approach to learning. Because of its flexibility, students will actively assist in the growth and design of the American Studies program at CSULB by establishing links among departments and areas of study and by designing their own plan of inquiry. Students will explore various aspects of society and culture at different moments in American history and situate the interactions between peoples in a culturally diverse society within national and global contexts.

American Studies students receive a broad liberal arts education focusing on American culture, traditions, artistic and material production, ideas, identities, and spaces. The major in American Studies offers a solid background for careers in law, journalism, public service, business, and education. The program also provides the foundation for graduate work in American Studies and related fields. In other words, the knowledge and skills our majors acquire prepares them to succeed in just about any field. 

The Ceramics program explores the production of both functional and non-functional art objects. Technical course work specializes in throwing, handbuilding, ceramic sculpture, moldmaking and casting, kiln design, clay and glaze technology. Special consideration is given to the history of ceramics and issues in contemporary art.

The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Jewish Studies is an interdisciplinary major that consists of courses in a variety of disciplines, including literature, history, religion, geography, Hebrew Language and politics. Students will gain an understanding of Jewish civilizations as the result of interactions of Jewish culture, history, and religion within both societies where Jews have been the dominant majority (the first two Jewish commonwealths and modern Israel) and the minority. Students will explore the constants and diversity of the Jewish experience in different eras and geographical settings. They will be able to define the parameters of the Diaspora and its significance on both Jewish and non-Jewish life. They will understand the significant Jewish beliefs, ethics, philosophies, and religious texts. Students will comprehend the place and role of Israel and Zionism in Jewish life, politics, culture, and religion. They will understand the history of the Holocaust/Shoah and its impact on both the Jewish and non-Jewish worldviews. Students will also gain a basic comprehension of and proficiency in Hebrew.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. Our students go on to other advanced degrees, become religious professionals, secondary and higher education teachers, librarians, educational entrepreneurs, managers or aid-workers in NGOs, writers or performance artists, business managers, and the like. William Bao Bean, an American venture capitalist in Asia, tells us that he only supports the ventures of Humanities majors because they have the critical and innovative mindset to be successful.

The mission of the Civil Engineering Program is to prepare students to succeed in the civil engineering profession by providing them with essential technical tools and skills and to promote the need for lifelong learning.

The Community Health Education option is designed for persons whose occupational objective is to serve as a community health educator with a public, not for profit or corporate health agency.

The Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) is comprised of 33 semester units. The program prepares students and/or returning professionals from diverse undergraduate backgrounds for advanced multidisciplinary design work in careers of their choice. Through the MA_HXDI program, students will develop expertise in the tools and methods of experience design as a strategy for making and adding value to systems, products, spaces, and services. Through a diverse faculty and collaborations with leading organizations, students will use cutting-edge technology tools while developing novel solutions to complex challenges. These tools provide both the quantitative data to support the qualitative research of human-centered design, as well as the digital interactions of contemporary human communication and experience. This ‘theory plus practice’ approach prepares students to smoothly transition into the broad spectrum of professional design roles, from design research to interaction design. Through research labs in the department of design, students have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, independently and through collaborations with business, government, education, entertainment, health care, and technology organizations. These collaborations provide students with highly sought after knowledge and skills for advanced design work.

The MS in Psychology, Option in Human Factors, is designed to prepare students to apply research-focused human factors skills to the design of jobs, information systems, consumer products, workplaces, and equipment in order to improve user performance, safety, and comfort.
