Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (STEM)

This program affords an opportunity for engineers and others to advance their competency in analysis and design to better meet the high technology needs of local industry. Each student selects two core courses and three graduate courses in one area of emphasis, and the remaining courses must augment and support the area of emphasis. Some current examples of areas of emphasis are Biomedical, Communications/Networking/Digital Signal Processing, Power/ Control Systems, and Electronics/Digital System. Students will choose one of the two alternatives: thesis, or comprehensive exam. Successful completion of a thesis provides a unifying culmination to the program, and an enhanced resume for future industrial or academic endeavor. A limited number of laboratory and teaching assistantships are available to qualified graduate students.

The programs in chemistry and biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level are planned to develop background in a specific science, to serve as preparation for graduate work in chemistry or biochemistry, and to provide a foundation for those students seeking careers in the chemical sciences, teaching, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health?related professions, and in industrial and governmental scientific occupations.

The Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) Professional Program at California State University, Long Beach is designed to prepare leaders for a changing world by providing the skills that employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. Greater Los Angeles is one of the most globally-connected metropolitan areas in the world. The region’s diversity of trade, international investments, cultures, and languages exceed that of all but a small handful of countries. Employment opportunities in California reflect a demand for related competencies globally.

The MAIA program, aligned with global standards in the field, combines interdisciplinary, policy-oriented, intercultural and global studies with career development. Through a cohort design, students attain both the international and project management skills employers demand for the global workforce of the 21st century. This 18-month program includes 12 months in residence, followed by a carefully placed internship with courses taken in residence or online. Graduates become prepared for careers in areas such as International Development & Relief, Migration Advocacy, International Non-Profit Management, International Business, and Trade Policy.

The MAIA program identifies and develops the professional skills necessary for a successful international career in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors—both at home and abroad. The core elements of the program include methodological skills, functional competence, and foreign language knowledge with a multidisciplinary approach. The curriculum applies prevalent theory to real-world situations, while developing tools for project development and problem resolution.

Film and Electronic Arts is an innovative program that emphasizes both theory and practice. Focusing on the integration of moving images, culture, and technology, the curriculum is designed to develop storytelling and production skills while providing a foundational education in the arts and humanities. Media history, theory, and aesthetics are taught as an integral part of production practices.

The Religious Studies M.A. at CSULB is the only M.A. in Religious Studies offered in the entire CSU system. That make it the least expensive Religious Studies M.A. in the entire state of California. It is a “stand-alone” M.A. program–one of about fifteen in the U.S. –which means that it is not an afterthought or consolation prize in some other degree program. We are going to give you personal attention that prepares you for the next level. An M.A. from CSULB can do what the gravitational field of Mars can do for a space probe on the way to Pluto. You can use our gravitational field to sling you into orbit for a better graduate program (if you want a Ph.D. or some other advanced degree) or career.

Why is this so? Third, we take your interest in Religion seriously and know that you want to grow as a person while you are learning. That means, whatever your religious position–from Atheist to Zoroastrian, Christian, Muslim, or Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, or Sikh, Neo-pagan or “None,” Fundamentalist or Progressive–you are welcome here. This means that you will meet people with religious positions that are different from your own and have conversations that you could not have imagined in a parochial program.

The Master of Science in Applied Statistics program trains students to utilize statistical methods to draw valid and meaningful inferences from data. Using a variety of statistical software (SAS, SPSS, Minitab, R), graduates are expected to analyze real-world data appropriately and communicate their findings effectively. The degree is granted to students who complete 30 units of course work and either pass two comprehensive examinations or fulfill the thesis/project requirement. Typically, the degree is obtained in four semesters.

The curriculum is designed to supplement mathematics, science and basic engineering courses in order to give students the specialization needed in different areas of aerospace engineering. In addition to acquiring technical knowledge, graduates will have completed appropriate courses in communications and in humanistic social studies.

History is a discipline at the core of the liberal arts tradition. It seeks to preserve, extend, and reevaluate our study of the past, and to connect it with the present. Students who specialize in History are typically those who plan to teach, practice law, or enter government service; but History students also go into business, librarianship, foundation work, management of local history projects, and fundraising. Some history alumni have become successful writers.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.
