The Master of Arts Degree in Education, Option in Social and Cultural Analysis of Education (SCAE), focuses on the social and cultural analysis of education in urban and global contexts. Emphasizing critical approaches to education, including critical theory and critical pedagogy, the degree's interdisciplinary nature provides the intellectual rigor necessary for analyzing the relationship between education and society and effecting social and educational justice. SCAE courses examine education in its historical, social, and political contexts, and may be applied to all levels of education—locally, nationally, and internationally. In the SCAE program, education is conceived broadly to encompass K-12 and higher education, community-based education, adult education and other spaces in which people engage in teaching and learning.

This program is designed both for students who wish to pursue further graduate study and those seeking a terminal degree. The program seeks to blend theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics and draws from a variety of disciplines.

The Special Concentration Option allows a student to plan an individualized course of study around a special interest. Recent students have designed special concentrations in Psycholinguistics, Computational Linguistics, teaching Spanish, teaching Japanese, and teaching Chinese.

The Master of Arts in Spanish from California State University, Long Beach opens doors for teachers, journalists, translators, writers, and other professionals seeking to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. The program has approximately 45 active students at any given time, a number that allows for individualized mentoring, advising, and intellectual engagement. Our graduates have become K-12 teachers, journalists, translators, interpreters, technical writers, community college instructors, lawyers, and PhD students. We offer an active program of intellectual and cultural events as well as opportunities for community and campus engagement. The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Jewish Studies is an interdisciplinary major that consists of courses in a variety of disciplines, including literature, history, religion, geography, Hebrew Language and politics. Students will gain an understanding of Jewish civilizations as the result of interactions of Jewish culture, history, and religion within both societies where Jews have been the dominant majority (the first two Jewish commonwealths and modern Israel) and the minority. Students will explore the constants and diversity of the Jewish experience in different eras and geographical settings. They will be able to define the parameters of the Diaspora and its significance on both Jewish and non-Jewish life. They will understand the significant Jewish beliefs, ethics, philosophies, and religious texts. Students will comprehend the place and role of Israel and Zionism in Jewish life, politics, culture, and religion. They will understand the history of the Holocaust/Shoah and its impact on both the Jewish and non-Jewish worldviews. Students will also gain a basic comprehension of and proficiency in Hebrew.

When resources are scarce, difficult choices must be made on how resources are to be divided among competing uses. Economics is a social science that addresses the efficient allocation of scarce resources.

A Master’s degree in political science provides a strong foundation for careers in government, political consulting, the law, academics, business, international organizations, education, and public service. A political science M.A. can be the basis for further study leading to a law degree, Ph.D., or other advanced degree.

The Political Science M.A Program at CSULB is a program for ambitious students interested in national and international politics. Our program allows students to acquire conceptual depth, learn methodological tools, and further develop their critical thinking abilities. The program is taught by instructors who do research on a variety of topics with contemporary political relevance.

The Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing is the recognized terminal degree which offers the minimum professional training deemed necessary by the major schools in the United States for university and college teaching and for positions in the publishing industry. It is also the degree most frequently held by professional writers.

Some students wishing to major in English have special interests or career objectives so different from those for which the other options are designed that another pattern of courses would better serve their personal educational needs. For those students, the Special Emphasis option offers an opportunity to pursue individually designed 41-unit programs of study. Student programs may center on technical writing, for example, or other writing goals; they may focus on American or English literature or literature in a particular genre, a particular historical period, or a particular theme.

A Special Emphasis program may include courses outside the Department of English closely related to a student’s focus in English studies. At least 21 units must be earned in the Department of English at CSULB and at least 21 units of the program must be upper division.

The Bachelor of Music degree is a high-unit professional degree and requires 132 units for graduation. Music units include the core requirements and one option. Students interested in the BM program must successfully complete an audition for entrance to the program. This should be accomplished prior to entrance to the University. Students wishing to consider the BM program after they have enrolled at CSULB may not apply after they have completed more than a maximum of 96 units.

Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from education to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical societal change. What unifies these diverse topics of study, however, is sociology’s core purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology is an exciting and enlightening field of study that analyzes and explains important issues in our personal lives, our communities, and the world. At the individual level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of things such as emotions and ideologies, racial identity, sexuality, health and wellness, and crime. At the societal level, sociology addresses issues such as poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, law and the criminal justice system, and social movements. And at the global level, sociology studies such phenomena as political power, migration, war, terrorism, human rights and economic development. Students of sociology are challenged to look beyond the “normal”, taken-for-granted views to develop deeper and revealing understandings of the world around us.
