Classics is a practical liberal arts major for developing critical thinking and writing skills, understanding the foundations of global civilization, fluency in English, and aesthetic and moral sensitivity.

Classics comprises the study of the ancient Greek and Roman languages, classical archaeology, literatures, and civilizations, as well as the peoples with whom they interacted. The Department of Classics provides a Bachelor of Arts in Classics as well as minors in Latin, Greek, and Classical Studies. Roman and Greek civilizations are the two options available for the Classics major.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is appropriate for those preparing for teaching careers in the physical sciences at the secondary level, as well as those whose goal is a liberal art education with an emphasis on physics, or engineers interested in a double major.

This option is designed primarily for those interested in careers that are related to zoology, ecology, and botany. It is particularly appropriate for students who wish to attend veterinary or graduate school, and for those seeking employment in environmental consulting firms, and fish and wildlife agencies. This option requires approximately 80-83 units in the major, of which 43-46 units are in lower division and 37 units are in upper division.

The composition program at CSULB provides students with advanced skills covering a wide range of compositional techniques and technologies in order that they become more informed, literate musicians, better prepared to develop their own unique creative compositional voice. The program provides a robust and cooperative musical environment where students have ample opportunities to have their work performed. Skills taught include: beginning and advanced film scoring, advanced theory, electronic and computer music, experimental music and digital media, sound design, advanced topics in listening and analysis, song writing, music theater, music and dance collaboration, sound engineering and recording.

This degree option prepares students to become professional composers in various contemporary styles and media including contemporary classical, film and electronic arts, theater, computer music and mixed media. It also prepares students for further study at the graduate level with goal of teaching at the college level.

The programs in chemistry and biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level are planned to develop background in a specific science, to serve as preparation for graduate work in chemistry or biochemistry, and to provide a foundation for those students seeking careers in the chemical sciences, teaching, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health?related professions, and in industrial and governmental scientific occupations.

This new degree program is aimed at pre-professional students, who will be able to use many professional school pre-requisites to fulfill their elective unit requirements

Graphic Design incorporates a broad approach to the transmission of ideas, information, and subjective impressions through the use of print, film, video, and computer media. The program prepares students for professional careers in design studios, advertising agencies, corporate design departments, motion graphics firms, web design companies, and free-lance consulting.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists simultaneously seek to understand the commonality as well as the diversity of human experience.

A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology provides solid preparation for students who wish to pursue a career in any field that involves people, including education, business, health care, sports, or community development. It is ideal for individuals who seek an understanding of behavioral principles while pursuing a well- rounded education. This degree is also designed to provide a strong foundation for graduate school, including the three Master’s degree programs offered in the department.

The Department of English at CSULB has over 40 tenure-track, tenured, and emeritus faculty whose research and teaching interests cover the range of periods, authors, and genres in British and American literature; focus on a variety of critical and theoretical approaches; and explore diverse topics in the study of reading and writing in English.Our graduate seminars are small classes that encourage students to examine and explore the topic intensively, and they are designed to broaden and deepen students’ understanding of the intellectual, cultural, rhetorical, and aesthetic traditions of literature and writing in English.

The MA program in English is designed to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the literary and rhetorical traditions of writing in English, as well as to provide the opportunity for intensive study in one or more specialized area(s) of literature or rhetoric and composition. The MA program in English emphasizes close reading and critical analysis by developing students’ abilities to situate texts within their larger aesthetic, historical, and professional contexts, conduct independent research, and formulate original arguments in oral presentations and writing.

The BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science, offers a course of study combining dance with specific kinesiology and science courses for students interested in teaching careers in dance, dance medicine, careers in dance fitness, or graduate education in the areas of dance science or related dance studies. Students interested in the BA in Dance, Option in Dance Science should meet with Program Coordinator Brooke Winder no later than the start of their 2nd year (earlier for transfer students). Additionally, students must pass BIOL 207 , BIOL 208 , and DANC 260 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 to satisfy the major specific declaration requirements. A non-performance-focused degree that sets music within the broader context of interdisciplinary studies, diversity, and contemporary thought. This degree has a basic music core, upper-division elective music units focused on popular, world, and film music as well as art music, an individualized track of non-music elective studies that focuses in at least two other disciplines (one major area and one or more minor areas), and a final research project culminating in a comprehensive senior paper/project that sets music within a context of historical, cultural, theoretical, or interdisciplinary studies, diversity issues, and contemporary thought. The project draws on an outside discipline from the student’s coursework in Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies.

An audition is required prior to admission to assess performance standard. All applicants to the program must meet with the BA advisor prior to, or at the beginning of, the first semester of residence to review the statement of purpose and to draw up an individualized study plan.
