Food Science is the study of the physical, biological and chemical make up of food and the concepts underlying food processing. Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging distribution and use of safe food.

The master's program prepares nurses to assume roles either as nurse practitioners or as nursing and healthcare systems executive managers.

The purpose of the nurse practitioner program is to prepare competent nurse practitioners who possess knowledge, skills and abilities in physical diagnosis, psycho-social assessment and management of health-illness needs in a primary or acute care environment.

The purpose of the Nursing and Healthcare Systems Executive Management program is to prepare nurses to assume executive-level positions and senior leadership roles in hospitals, clinics, healthcare systems and other healthcare entities serving patients in highly complex and diverse settings.

The master of science degree is open to qualified students who desire advanced preparation in a variety of areas of clinical specialization and executive management.

A non-performance-focused degree that sets music within the broader context of interdisciplinary studies, diversity, and contemporary thought. This degree has a basic music core, upper-division elective music units focused on popular, world, and film music as well as art music, an individualized track of non-music elective studies that focuses in at least two other disciplines (one major area and one or more minor areas), and a final research project culminating in a comprehensive senior paper/project that sets music within a context of historical, cultural, theoretical, or interdisciplinary studies, diversity issues, and contemporary thought. The project draws on an outside discipline from the student’s coursework in Interdisciplinary and Cultural Studies.

An audition is required prior to admission to assess performance standard. All applicants to the program must meet with the BA advisor prior to, or at the beginning of, the first semester of residence to review the statement of purpose and to draw up an individualized study plan.

The Masters of Science in Gerontology Program provides a flexible interdisciplinary curriculum that gives new and seasoned professionals the competencies necessary for success in the field of aging. It provides experiential as well as didactic graduate education and professional training in gerontology for individuals planning to become professionals in public and private agencies. It provides field experiences to enhance understanding of concepts, themes, and skills related to aging at various life stages, within different gender and racial/ethnic groups and among people with various abilities. Students gain knowledge and skills necessary to plan, develop and implement innovative programs to meet the needs of the growing aging population locally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally. Students are supported in exploring aging-related professional values and ethics.

The Master of Public Health in Community Health provides an opportunity for students: to specialize in global health or latino health within the general context of Public Health; to increase competence in designing, implementing, and evaluating social behavior changes programs in preparation for serving in various health agencies; prepare for teaching at college and university levels; and for administrative positions in public and private health agencies.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is offered for the student eventually seeking a Master of Fine Arts degree, the position of a professional artist or designer, and for teaching studio art within a selected specialization. The B.F.A. degree program is demanding, requiring high quality performance in order to develop the professional competence of talented students toward successful entrance into the professional art field.

Wood

The Wood program emphasizes both material and design explorations. Creative problem solving and ingenuity are engaged with fields such as furniture design, concept design, special effects and production design for film, display and exhibition design, fabrication, and sculpture.

The Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) is comprised of 33 semester units. The program prepares students and/or returning professionals from diverse undergraduate backgrounds for advanced multidisciplinary design work in careers of their choice. Through the MA_HXDI program, students will develop expertise in the tools and methods of experience design as a strategy for making and adding value to systems, products, spaces, and services. Through a diverse faculty and collaborations with leading organizations, students will use cutting-edge technology tools while developing novel solutions to complex challenges. These tools provide both the quantitative data to support the qualitative research of human-centered design, as well as the digital interactions of contemporary human communication and experience. This ‘theory plus practice’ approach prepares students to smoothly transition into the broad spectrum of professional design roles, from design research to interaction design. Through research labs in the department of design, students have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research, independently and through collaborations with business, government, education, entertainment, health care, and technology organizations. These collaborations provide students with highly sought after knowledge and skills for advanced design work.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. The M.F.A. degree's 60-unit plan of study emphasizes choreographic exploration and presentation in addition to preparing students for teaching careers in higher education. The program provides M.F.A. candidates with theoretical and practice-based study, teaching opportunities, production skills, and a thesis project focusing on the creation of original choreography. CSULB Dance has chosen to keep the M.F.A. degree small and selective in order to provide students with ready resources and mentorship. We seek candidates whose experiences include professional-level investigation and choreography in dance beyond the baccalaureate level. Practitioners of any movement/dance genre are encouraged to apply to the M.F.A. in Dance degree program.

Exercise science centers on the effects of training and physical activity on the human body. Students will study the physiology, biomechanics, and motor control of exercise and how training can improve human function including health, disease, and performance. This option prepares students for careers in human movement and allied health fields as well as those interested in graduate work in these areas or those pursuing training in medicine and other healthcare professions.
