Clothing needs are influenced by all aspects of society, and Apparel Design and Apparel Merchandising graduates must understand the social, ethical, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence clothing selection.

For this reason, the Apparel Design and Merchandising specialization has a strong interdisciplinary base integrating knowledge from arts, psychology, sociology, economics, business, history, physics, and chemistry. The liberal education provided by this program empowers you to think critically and to gain a sense of your intellectual and creative abilities — qualities highly coveted by employers.

The Integrated Studies major enables you to develop a breadth of knowledge across six content areas you will teach in elementary school: the arts, health and fitness, language arts, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. These are the six content disciplines of Washington state’s Endorsement Competencies for Elementary Education K–8.

If you want to be certified with an endorsement in Elementary Education, you will complete the requirements for (1) a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Studies and (2) the Residency Teacher Certification Program in the School of Education. To prepare interior design students to succeed, the courses in the Interior Design major encompass knowledge and skills in such areas as elements and principles of design, space planning, architectural drafting by hand and computer, art and design history, universal design (design for a range of ages and abilities), interior finishes and materials, and sustainable, resilient design.

As part of a program within a university committed to changing the world, the interior design faculty place strong emphasis on areas of universal and environmentally responsible design, incorporating their principles into projects in multiple courses.

Today’s Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) educators instruct and train students for life management and to work in a wide variety of fields. They teach early childhood development, food production and hospitality management, and apparel and interior design. They often teach courses in high demand by area employers, who may provide input into the curriculum and offer internships to students.

At SPU, teacher certification in Family and Consumer Science Education is offered at the secondary level. SPU is an approved institution for vocational (career and technical education) certification of family and consumer science teachers in middle, junior, and high school family and consumer science programs.

Secondary school teachers’ responsibilities are often more varied than at the elementary school level. FCS teachers may teach course content using child development laboratories, food preparation kitchens, or computer simulations. Student groups complete exercises that require them to apply knowledge, interact with others, adapt to new technology, and logically think through problems.

With a degree in Electrical Engineering, you’ll prepare for a wide set of rewarding career options in a dynamic field. Some of the projects you’ll work on may not even be invented, yet!

Electrical engineers design and develop things such as new energy systems, biomedical equipment, computing technologies, telecommunications, transportation, entertainment, and many more systems related to electricity, electronics, or electromagnetism.

When you receive a bachelor of science in Ecology at SPU, you will be ready to work in ecology or biological subdisciplines such as marine biology, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, behavioral ecology, and wildlife management. This major prepares you for graduate studies or a professional ecology/biology career.

About the Ecology Major

As an Ecology major, you will focus on principles that enhance environmental quality and make efficient use of nonrenewable resources. You will also learn to apply this knowledge to help address agricultural and environmental challenges.

If you are interested in science and health, fascinated by food, and want to work with individuals and families, a degree in Food and Nutritional Sciences may be right for you. A foundation in the sciences — with courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, and statistics — prepares you for the in-depth study of food and nutrition.

Food and Nutritional Sciences General Emphasis
The Food and Nutritional Science emphasis provides a broad background for those students interested in food and nutrition, but who are not seeking the registered dietitian (RD) credential.

Students with this degree may work in clinical, research, public health, or food service settings. The degree also provides an interesting background for those interested in nursing, dental hygiene, the allied health professions such as occupational therapy and physical therapy, culinary programs, and food science.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Psychology majors are rigorous yet flexible programs designed to meet the American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology major while also fulfilling SPU’s mission to provide students with a transformative and holistic experience grounded in Christian faith.

As such, these programs prepare you with extensive knowledge of the field; scientific and critical thinking skills; an awareness of diversity, ethics in practice, and social responsibility; effective oral and written communication skills; and professional-level training and experiences (e.g., research and internship opportunities) for both careers and graduate school in psychology.

Psychology (BA)

The BA in Psychology is designed for students with a broad range of career and graduate school interests such as, but not limited to, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work, school counseling, and industrial and organizational psychology.

Animal Behavior: Designed for students interested in training animals, working with owners and their pets, or seeking to become a certified applied animal behaviorist.

The BA in in Human Development and Family Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to individual and family development across the lifespan, providing opportunities for you to study how people develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially within the context of the family and society.

It is a versatile undergraduate degree for anyone who is intrigued by human nature and the forces that help shape it. As a graduate, you will be prepared to work with people in a variety of roles, including social and family services, teaching and education, advocacy and non-profit work, and business and health related careers.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics is a flexible yet demanding major designed for students interested in careers involving the applications of mathematics in a particular field.
