When you receive a bachelor of science in Ecology at SPU, you will be ready to work in ecology or biological subdisciplines such as marine biology, forestry, fisheries, agriculture, behavioral ecology, and wildlife management. This major prepares you for graduate studies or a professional ecology/biology career.

About the Ecology Major

As an Ecology major, you will focus on principles that enhance environmental quality and make efficient use of nonrenewable resources. You will also learn to apply this knowledge to help address agricultural and environmental challenges.

The BA in in Human Development and Family Studies offers an interdisciplinary approach to individual and family development across the lifespan, providing opportunities for you to study how people develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially within the context of the family and society.

It is a versatile undergraduate degree for anyone who is intrigued by human nature and the forces that help shape it. As a graduate, you will be prepared to work with people in a variety of roles, including social and family services, teaching and education, advocacy and non-profit work, and business and health related careers.

As a student in the Economics major in the School of Business, Government, and Economics at SPU, you will study many vital issues that affect human flourishing while emphasizing a Christian perspective on individual and society's decisions about how to organize the production and distribution of goods and services.

About the Economics Major

Economics is the study of human decision making, interconnectedness, and the distribution and allocation of scarce resources. This major emphasizes development and financial economics, with a focus on decision making, resource stewardship, and public policy.

Our program prepares students with industry experience through our SBGE internship program. Our students have held internships at leading local businesses and industries such as Safeco, Morgan Stanley, Starbucks, and Nordstrom.

Students pursuing graduate study are encouraged to complete our 15 credit calculus series. Our graduates have gone on to study at top institutions such as Notre Dame, Baylor, and the University of Washington.

A Public Policy concentration prepares you to pursue work and/or further studies in public administration, global development, and politics.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Psychology majors are rigorous yet flexible programs designed to meet the American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology major while also fulfilling SPU’s mission to provide students with a transformative and holistic experience grounded in Christian faith.

As such, these programs prepare you with extensive knowledge of the field; scientific and critical thinking skills; an awareness of diversity, ethics in practice, and social responsibility; effective oral and written communication skills; and professional-level training and experiences (e.g., research and internship opportunities) for both careers and graduate school in psychology.

Psychology (BS)

The BS in Psychology is designed for students with a broad range of career and graduate school interests such as, but not limited to, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy, social work, school counseling, and industrial and organizational psychology.

Cross Cultural: This track is specifically designed for students who want to work with minority populations, and students interested in the application of psychology to our increasingly multicultural and globalized society.

If you are interested in science and health, fascinated by food, and want to work with individuals and families, a degree in Food and Nutritional Sciences may be right for you. A foundation in the sciences — with courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, and statistics — prepares you for the in-depth study of food and nutrition.

Sports and Exercise Emphasis
The Nutrition in Sports and Exercise emphasis provides you with a broad background in food and nutritional sciences, along with further study of exercise science and the specialized nutritional requirements for physically active individuals.

Given the sizeable Spanish-speaking population in our region and the nation as a whole, Spanish is an ideal language for you to learn at Seattle Pacific University.

Spanish is, after Chinese, the most common first language in the world. And because more than 35 million Spanish speakers live in the United States, a growing number of employers prefer to hire individuals who can effectively communicate in Spanish. Likewise, communicating in Spanish can benefit you when serving in many mission organizations and nonprofits.

Beyond the clear economic benefits, learning Spanish can broaden your cultural horizons, sharpen your critical-thinking skills, and increase your creativity. Spanish is even one of the official languages of the United Nations.

The Business Administration major in the School of Business, Government, and Economics at SPU allows you to develop essential business skills in a uniquely Christian environment that emphasizes values, ethics, and an understanding of business as a means to serve.

Business Administration Major
The Business Administration major provides you with a broad-based education in the fundamental theories, principles, and practices of modern business. You will learn standards of professional and ethical behavior, along with the technical expertise and leadership attributes necessary to attain a variety of positions in business.

As part of the Business Administration major, students also gain vital industry experience by participating in our SBGE internship program. Our students have held internships at leading local businesses and companies such as Starbucks, Boeing, Microsoft, the Seattle Mariners, and Merrill Lynch.

The Information Systems concentration includes problem solving and programming, computer networks, and information and database systems — critical information in this age of technology.

The program focuses on the development of tactile skills including drawing, painting, printmaking, metallurgy, and sculpture. The goal of the this track is to graduate properly trained, competent artists educated in traditional and contemporary media, grounded by historical and cultural knowledge, and instilled with a desire to explore the spiritual nature of art as an expression of faith.

 The Film Studies major prepares you to become a creative and informed writer, audience member, and practitioner of film, through a deeper understanding of film art, history, aesthetics, criticism, and production.

About the Film Studies major

You will develop skills that are at the heart of a liberal arts education, including writing, critical thinking, and problem solving. The major provides an array of course offerings informed by a Christian perspective, with the aim of graduating students of competence and character who are prepared for professional careers, advanced study, and service. Primary goals include:

• Cinema literacy: You will practice critical media literacy within the contexts of American and International cinemas.
• Historical literacy: You will understand the formation of the American film industry and the pivotal roles movies have played in shaping American and International cultures.
• Creative practice: This major prepares a generation of film critics, audiences, and professional.

Who designs the bridge between hardware and software? Computer engineers! Graduates of this program go on to analyze and design computers, peripheral devices, or embedded systems such as those found in today’s smart appliances and transportation.

Armed with a solid foundation in math, physics, computer science, and electronics, in this program you’ll choose from a wide range of specialized electives, from software engineering and networks, to systems design or even alternative energy.
