Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

In today's complex, competitive world of data and technology, the global healthcare, cybersecurity, environment, natural and man-made disaster-related challenges that we face have created demand for a new type of professional — one who deals in "big data." Employers across industries are increasingly seeking individuals with data visualization and data analytics capacities who can model uncertainty in systems, perform decision analysis and develop quantitative approaches to engineering enterprise management strategies.

In the challenging and fast-paced 21st century environment, the critical role of an engineering manager calls for a professional who is skilled in the creation, application and management of technology to solve complex issues, invent new processes and products, build new enterprises and gain actionable insights from data. Individuals who seek to develop these skills come to the School of Systems & Enterprises' (SSE's) Master of Engineering in engineering management program.

The program provides students with a strong understanding of the technology involved in engineering projects and the management process through which these technologies are applied. Through the Master of Engineering in engineering management, the SSE seeks to create engineers who can interface with technical and business aspects to add the most value to their respective enterprises.
