The goal of the program is to develop successful leaders in today’s organization. Our graduates know how to think strategically about leading people in a diverse environment, make sound ethical decisions, and utilize technology to provide a strategic advantage at an appropriate level of risk. In addition, our graduates are prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

The Technology Management program is built around a core set of six courses that provide the foundational knowledge in leadership, communications, ethics and project management. The core courses are supplemented with technically-oriented courses in entrepreneurship, international project management, and organizational leadership. Students can also earn certificates in systems engineering, and cyber security along with the Masters degree.

The graduate programs at the Erickson School of Aging Studies provide integrated, interdisciplinary professional training for leaders in the growing longevity economy. Graduates will meet a growing workforce need for leaders with professional education to serve in management positions in public, private, and non-profit/advocacy organizations providing services to older adults.

The Erickson School of Aging Studies’ goal is to prepare graduates to apply this integrated perspective in leadership positions in a broad array of aging services organizations from government agencies/organizations and advocacy/non-profit groups to a variety of positions in the for-profit business arena.

The Systems Engineering (SE) Program at UMBC is designed to accelerate the development of systems engineers by providing practical experience that can be immediately applied on the job. Students learn from industry experts how to develop operable systems that meet customer requirements, while successfully navigating the complexities of system design.

Courses are developed and taught by senior systems engineers and address the entire systems engineering life cycle, including requirements analysis, systems architecture and design, modeling, simulation and analysis, and system implementation and test. Classes are held at convenient late afternoon or early evening times to meet the needs of working professionals.

The graduate program in Intercultural Communication allows students to develop advanced foreign language proficiency, to train them to function comfortably and effectively in intercultural situations, and to prepare them for specific career goals through individual courses of study and internships. Students and faculty come from various parts of the world, and participation in the program is itself a significant intercultural experience.

The Department of Physics offers graduate programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in physics. The Department is located in the 78,000 sq. ft. Physics building (built in 1999), which contains numerous research and teaching labs, offices, classrooms, a machine shop, and a physics library. Research in the UMBC Physics Department is centered in 4 main areas: condensed matter physics, quantum optics and quantum information science, astrophysics, and atmospheric physics. Faculty members are engaged in both theoretical and experimental research in these areas.

The graduate program in Computer Science provides advanced instruction and training and research opportunities to prepare students for careers in business, industry, academia and government agencies. The program reflects state-of-the-art knowledge in major theoretical and applied aspects of computation.

The MPS is designed to prepare computer science, information systems, and other technical professionals to fill management and leadership roles in cybersecurity. This interdisciplinary degree program gives security professionals the range of knowledge and skills needed to be successful as managers in the emerging field of cybersecurity. Coursework includes a blend of management/legal/business courses with more technically focused courses.

The Atmospheric Physics (ATPH) graduate program aims to educate future leaders in the physical and Earth sciences. The curriculum is designed to train students with both deep understanding of the fundamental laws of physics that govern weather and climate as well as practical tools and skills in a broad range of applications. The ATPH faculty members involve graduate students in wide-ranging research areas, including the design and fabrication of airborne and satellite borne sensors, active and passive remote sensing techniques, ultraviolet to thermal infrared spectroscopy, light scattering and radiative transfer, atmospheric dynamics, and many others.

Instructional Systems Development (ISD) is one of UMBC’s most established graduate programs. Our online certificate and Master’s programs provide an innovative and engaging curriculum. We offer all courses in an online format to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals. An individual plan of graduate study in chemical engineering compatible with the student’s interest and background is offered. The primary emphasis of the program’s research activities is biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Cross-discipline thesis research projects in these areas are encouraged.
